The Salvation Army of Carson City is just one and a half weeks into its annual Red Kettle fundraiser and is 35 percent short from what it collected in 2012. The news comes at a time when more than 1,000 Carson City area children have registered for Christmas day food and toys directed through the nonprofit organization.

The Salvation Army relies on money raised in the red kettles — in coins, dollars and checks (and the occasional diamond ring or gold tooth) to serve more than 17,000 individuals in Carson City, Dayton and Douglas County each year, said Lt. Mark Cyr.

The Carson City Salvation Army has been getting calls from families in need for several weeks asking for help. Cyr urges those seeing the kettles to drop what they can because every cent helps. The Salvation Army has registered more than 1,500 local children this holiday season who are in need of food and Christmas toys, he said.

All money raised in the red kettles stays in the community in which it was collected. For more information about the Red Kettle Campaign, please contact Lt. Mark Cyr at (775) 887-9120. Visit www.carsoncitysalarmy.org.
