A 60-year-old Carson City man was arrested Wednesday night in the area of South Carson and Rhodes Street for misdemeanor suspicion of DUI and other charges.

According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched at 8:14 p.m. to locate a possible intoxicated driver. The reporting party was following the suspect vehicle southbound on North Carson Street and advised the suspect vehicle was failing to maintain its travel lane and nearly had a head on collision with another vehicle while in Washoe Valley.

A deputy was able to find the vehicle, followed it and observed it weaving in its travel lane, crossing the dashed white lane line and white right fog line at the edge of the road. The deputy performed a traffic stop at the intersection of South Carson and Rhodes Street.

The driver identified himself with his Nevada driver’s license. The officer observed thick, slurred speech and slow movements. He was asked if he would perform standardized field sobriety tests. He agreed. He denied consuming alcohol and said he takes Xanax, having taken his last dose that morning.

While speaking with the man, the deputy observed his balance was wobbly. The man showed clues of impairment on the tests. He had a slight odor of alcohol on his breath but refused to provide a preliminary breath test and was arrested.

At jail he refused evidentiary testing. A search warrant to obtain blood samples was granted by a Carson City judge and samples were collected. At intake into the jail, he voluntarily provided a preliminary breath test sample to jail staff with a result of .140, the arrest report states. He faces misdemeanor charges of DUI, failure to maintain a travel lane and failure to obey traffic control devices. Bail: $1,336.

Youngest nursing grad ever at WNC makes dreams come true quickly

In the 35 years that Western Nevada College has been offering an associate degree in nursing program, there hasn’t been a graduate as young as Morgan Tingle.

She will graduate with her Associate of Applied Science degree in nursing at the age of 19 on Monday, May 22. She also was the youngest admitted into the program as a 17-year-old two years ago.

“I think being a younger student in the program gives me a different perspective than the majority of nursing students,” Tingle said. “It shows my passion about my profession. It means I have more time to experience nursing as a career and to advance my skills. It also gives me many years and opportunities to further my profession in nursing.”

Tingle’s unparalleled accomplishment has made her appreciate who has helped her reach this point and triggered excitement about the people she can help in the future.

“I have grown so much personally and professionally since the beginning of the program and I have acquired so many practical nursing skills,” she said. “I am so grateful for the knowledgeable and caring instructors who have encouraged me and pushed me to get to where I am today, as well as my scholarship donors who have supported me. I am grateful to my fellow students who support and push each other to study and succeed. I am so excited to begin making a difference in the community and people’s lives.”

Tingle identified a professional career that excited her and matched her interests by the time she was 13. From baby-sitting she learned that she loved spending time with children and caring for babies. When she excelled in biology and anatomy classes in middle school and high school, she realized that nursing would be the perfect calling for her.

“I decided to become a nurse so I could make a difference in others’ lives,” Tingle said.

WNC's Jump Start College hastened Tingle's nursing school plans by allowing her to take the prerequisite classes during her senior year at Carson High School.

Judith Cordia, director and division chair of WNC's Nursing & Allied Health Department, was impressed by Tingle’s credentials coming into the program.

"Morgan was admitted into the nursing program because she met the qualifications, which are rigorous," Cordia said. "She followed her dream, stayed focused and proved that these are essentials that pave the way to success.
"The faculty and I realized what a special opportunity this was for Morgan and welcomed the challenge to provide her with an education as the cornerstone for all of her future educational endeavors."

As she has progressed through WNC’s nursing program, Tingle has personally experienced what attracted her to the program in the first place.

“The most rewarding part of the nursing program has been having the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others,” Tingle said. “Some days it can be something small like putting a smile on a patient’s face; other days it can be the feeling of awe after making someone's heart beat again when you weren't so sure if they were going to make it.”

Tingle’s accelerated higher education pace hasn’t slowed by any means. While enrolled in WNC’s nursing program, she took a class during fall and spring semesters at the University of Nevada, Reno, to move closer to a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing.

“Since I have completed some of the classes during nursing school, I only have nine more classes left in the RN to BSN program,” Tingle said. “I will finish these classes while I work as a registered nurse (RN) at Carson Tahoe Hospital. I expect to obtain my bachelor’s degree in December of 2018.”

Through her clinical experiences, Tingle became enamored with the personnel at Carson Tahoe Hospital.
“I enjoyed Carson Tahoe Hospital's environment the best. I valued the teamwork demonstrated on each unit and I wanted to be a part of this team,” she said.

Tingle and her nursing classmates will celebrate their graduation with a pinning ceremony at 5 p.m. Friday, May 19 at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St. in Carson City.

Two bills were introduced Thursday aimed to recognize firefighters with a memorial in Carson City and further enhance safety measures for Nevada's first emergency responders.

Nevada Senate Majority Leader Aaron D. Ford joined police and fire representatives to announce the legislation. Senate Bill 540 will create a memorial for Nevada firefighters at the Capitol Complex in Carson City, and Senate Bill 541 creates a sentencing enhancement for certain felony offenses when the victim is targeted because he or she is first responder.

“Today, we’re sending a clear message that Nevadans honor and appreciate our first responders who dedicate their lives to keeping our communities safe,” said Senator Ford. “These bills will give the fallen firefighters the respect and recognition they deserve and will send a message that Nevada will not tolerate targeted attacks against our brave first responders.”

“Every day, our police officers, firefighters, and other first responders are willing to risk injury and even death to serve the public,” said Richard McCann, Executive Director of the Nevada Association of Public Safety Officers. “Senate Bill 541 will send a message that the state of Nevada has no tolerance for those who seek to harm law enforcement and first responders, and those who do will face significant penalties.”

“Nevada’s fallen firefighters deserve to be honored at the seat of state government.” said Angelo Aragon, President of the Professional Firefighters of Nevada. “We are proud to support Senate bill 540 which will place the Nevada Firefighters Memorial on the grounds of the Capitol Complex to let our brave firefighters and their families know that we greatly appreciate the service of those who’ve made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Two local students have been recognized for their completion of a 16-week internship program created through the Carson City branch of the Nevada Division of Parole and Probation and Western Nevada College.

WNC students Steven Larkin and Sindy Barajas were selected for the Spring 2017 semester. On Thursday, May 18, the two successfully completed the program. They intend to finish their college education through the University of Nevada, Reno.

"They did an outstanding job in the program and learned a great deal about the Parole and Probation function," said Lt. Jorge Pierrott with Nevada Parole and Probation, Northern Command, Carson City.

The internship program is designed to give students the opportunity to learn more about the inner workings of the Division of Parole and Probation. The internship introduces students to all facets of the Parole and Probation function and insight on how parole and probation impacts the criminal justice system, Pierrott said.

The internship was geared to provide students with a “hands on” experience in order for them to receive the most realistic experience of what Parole and Probation professionals do on the job, he said.

Students were taught the rehabilitation process, education on how to communicate with offenders and first-hand experience on how parole and probation officers guide offenders to become contributing members of society. They also learned the tactics and methods used by Parole and Probation staff to prevent criminal activity and increase public safety.

To be picked, students selected to participate in the program had to be in good standing with the college, possess strong leadership skills, strong communication skills, possess a positive attitude and be motivated to learn.

Western Nevada College staff performed initial interviews on all potential candidates. Those students who passed the initial interview were later interviewed by the Division of Parole and Probation before being accepted to the program.

The Division of Parole and Probation and Western Nevada College intend to continue the program and give future students the opportunity to learn more about the Parole and Probation function, while receiving college credit.
