Two 18-year-old Carson City men were arrested Monday and face misdemeanor reckless driving charges for drag racing through the east side of town.
Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies patrolling the area at around 11 p.m. found the pair racing side-by-side, accelerating quickly to a speed of 65 mph in the posted 35 mph zone. One driver was in a White 1994 Honda and the other in a silver 1987 Mazda.
Patrol officers attempted to catch up to the vehicles as they both turned onto south bound Saliman Road from William Street. When the two vehicles approached the intersection on south bound Robinson Street, both stopped at the stop sign, according to the arrest report, and then began to accelerate quickly with tires screeching on the roadway.
Both vehicles continued at a high rate of speed in excess of 70 mph in a posted 35 mph. The vehicles then turned into the gas station at the corner of 5th and Saliman where they were contacted by law officers, the report states.
The driver of the Honda became argumentative and initially would not follow instructions asked by the officer, the report states. Both vehicles were impounded and both men were taken into custody. Bail: $412 each.
Two teens were cited last month for racing down Saliman near Fremont Elementary School with one of the cars flipping. Both teens were cited and released to their parents.
