Sports Kiosk Ban Bill Passes Assembly

CARSON CITY — A bill that bans sports kiosks from bars and taverns passed in the Assembly on Thursday with a vote of 41-0, despite sparking controversy earlier in the legislative session. SB416 would restrict free-standing sports-betting machines and defines sports kiosks as sports books, which only casinos can have.

Assembly Minority Leader Pat Hickey, R-Reno, said of the bill, that he supported it despite having initial misgivings.

“One of the concerns I had when I first read the bill was the impression that it might inhibit a small-business owner’s ability to sell or transfer their business,” Hickey said. “I understand it’s been made clear that there’s no provision in this bill that would require an existing business to add a kitchen or meet the 2,500 square foot requirement upon sale of the business.”
