Carson City nonprofit Food for Thought has teamed up with the Carson Nugget to make sure needy children stay fed this summer.

“We were in need of a kitchen to make lunches for children in our program and the Carson Nugget stepped right up to the plate and agreed to allow us to use their kitchen facilities,” said Stephanie Gardner, executive director, Food for Thought. “This is great because it will allow us to continue this much needed program during the summer months when school is not in session.”

Food for Thought will serve lunch Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Terrace Park in Carson City from June 10 to Aug. 16. Children ages 2-18 can come to the park and enjoy lunch. The Food for Thought summer program began serving nutritious lunches in Carson City last summer.

“We are so glad we are able to help so children don’t have to go hungry when they are not in school,” said Star Anderson, Carson Nugget General Manager. “We are committed to giving back to the community and this is one way we can make a difference,” she said.

Food for Thought purchases, makes the food for the lunch program and then is reimbursed for some of the costs by the USDA. The program plans to partner with the Carson High School Culinary Arts program and employ two culinary students to develop lunch menus and assemble the lunches. Volunteer Linda Marrone and her granddaughter have also agreed to assist in helping make the lunches.

Last year the program fed approximately 67 children a day with a peak of 115 in one day. However Gardner estimates there will be more children participating in the program this year.

“This is our second year and we believe the word is getting out,” she said. “We also expect the lunches will be in demand because of the delicious menus that will be prepared by our student culinary experts,” she said.
