Carson City Bike Month Bigger Than Ever

May is Bike Month in Carson City, and that means more bike riders out and about, commuting, or riding for fun. In honor of National Bike Month, Muscle-Powered, Citizens for a Walkable and Bikeable Carson City has developed a full schedule of events for 2013, including the Tour de Carson May 5- a 30-mile bike ride for more advanced riders, along with two Family Cruise rides, one on May 15 at 6 p.m. starting at Telegraph Square, and a second Ride with a Vet on May 18 in conjunction with Chapter 388 of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

Bike to Work Day is May 17- on that day commuter stations are set up for cyclists with a helmet at LA Bakery, Comma Coffee, Bistro at Bryan (DCNR state building) and San Rafael Coffee Company.

The Corporate Challenge is May 13-17. Sign up by contacting Jeff Potter at corporatechallengecc@gmail.com. Team and solo competitions for distance commuted that week.
Bike art at Artsy Fartsy all month May 1-30.

End of Bike to Work Party is May 18 at Telegraph Street from 3-6 p.m. There will be a street closure, food booths by Horseshoe Club, Mo& Sluggos/Sassafras and Carson City Confections.

The Ride with a Vet, Chapter 388 of Vietnam Veterans of America and MusclePowered are co-sponsoring a Family Bike Ride that start at 2:30 p.m. at Telegraph Square, a short, easy 5-mile bike ride for all level riders. Helmets required, children must be accompanied by an adult.

The surf band Riptide Bandits is scheduled to play for the party beginning at 4 p.m. Raffle will include donated items from local businesses, highlight of the raffle is the chance to win two cruiser bikes, provided at cost by Bike Habitat. Raffle tickets available day of the event. Artsy Fartsy will hold a with a silent auction May 18 for art bikes. Nevada Dept. of Transportation and Carson City Health Department will be running a bike obstacle course for kids, a slow race, tricycle race and other fun on bikes is planned. Bring your bike for the afternoon and have some fun!

Rick Gunn, former photographer for the Nevada Appeal will present his photography slide show from his around the world trip “Soulcycler” at 6:30 p.m. on May 24 at the Methodist Church.

The bike movie “Flying Scottsman” will be shown at 6:30 p.m. at Sassafrass on May 6.
A flat tire clinic is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Bike Smith on May 13.
A Women’s Bike Clinic is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Bike Habitat on May 23.

Thanks to the community support Bike Month has really grown this year into a full on event. We encourage everyone to come out, take a bike ride, explore the new trails the City has put in, and have some fun on the streets and trails in Carson City. Be visible, ride responsibly, wear your helmet, and most importantly --have a good time!
