In this week's It's Your City update, Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell provides insight on news and happenings around town, commenting on decisions made at the May 15 Board of Supervisors meeting and noting the significant drop in the city's unemployment rate in April.
Unemployment in Carson City fell by 2.5 percentage points to 7.8 percent in April, after employers added 300 jobs between March and April making it one of the best metro areas for job growth in the state, according to figures released Friday by Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
Crowell also noted the board's unanimous decision to hire Nick Marano as the City Manager for Carson City. Most recently, Marano was a management consultant who focused on training and placing veterans in good careers.
Prior to that, Nick served 28 years on active duty as an infantry officer in the Marine Corps and retired as a colonel. Nick’s last position was the Commanding Officer of the Corps’ largest base, Camp Pendleton, Calif., from 2009-2012.
An experienced leader, Marano served four tours in Iraq from 2003-2007, commanding a highly decorated infantry battalion. He begins the job June 2. Marano replaces Larry Werner who retired in December 2013 and who is now serving as interim manager for Douglas County.
The board also decided that the multipurpose athletic center goes forward with the facility being built by the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada.
Supervisors will meet again today, Monday, at a special meeting beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center. The Board will look to approve Carson City's final fiscal year budget for 2014-2015 and the Redevelopment Authority fiscal year budget.
