Carson City Supervisor Karen Abowd gives a recap on the actions taken by the Board of Supervisors at its April 17, 2014 meeting.

At the meeting Supervisors again approved an ordinance allowing for a 1/8-cent sales tax for public infrastructure projects including: street and pedestrian improvements in the downtown area, Carson Street, William Street, Highway 50 east commercial corridors; the construction, expansion and improvement of an animal shelter; the construction expansion and improvements for the multi-purpose athletic center, also known as MAC, and improvements to the existing community center.

The Board voted for the improvements by a 4 to 1 majority with Supervisor Jim Shirk dissenting. The final reading will go before the board again May 1. Once passed the tax will begin being collected in October. The shared tax impact on families would be about $12.50 a year. For families who don't buy big ticket items it would be less.

Improvements to the city's 911 service and upgrades to the city's landfill was approved. Carson City supervisors also discussed medical marijuana dispensaries. The Planning Department has been directed to give supervisors a map of proposed parcel areas that will allow for two dispensaries.

Five finalists have been approved for the Carson City City Manager position. On May 1 each member of the Board of Supervisors will meet individually with each candidates and May 2 the board will meet with the candidates. It is the hope by the end of May 2 a new city manager will be picked. Go here to view interviews with each of the candidates.

Finally, supervisors discussed the city's effluent water contingency plan. At issue are the contracts for effluent water negotiated years ago. Priorities are the Nevada State Prison Farm, Empire Ranch Golf Course, Eagle Valley Golf Course and Silver Oak Golf Course. Voluntary reductions of 25 percent has been planned.
