A prescribed fire in the Round Hill area at Lake Tahoe is putting up a lot of smoke that has made its way into the Carson City and Dayton areas, officials said Saturday afternoon.

A Douglas County Sheriff's Office dispatcher confirmed the prescribed fire is off of Kent Way and is part of an active controlled burn that is indeed putting off a lot of smoke. Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District has a crew on the prescribed burn. The U.S. Forest Service reports a prescribed burn in the Cave Rock area as well.

There are no prescribed fires burning in or around Carson City or Dayton, according to fire officials in both counties.

Smoke from prescribed fire may continue for several days after the initial ignition. Smoke that settles in low lying areas in the morning usually lifts out of the area during normal daytime heating. All prescribed fires are monitored regularly for burning and smoke dispersal and action is taken to mitigate concerns as they arise.

Prescribed fire operations by the U.S. Forest Service in various locations around the Lake Tahoe Basin may continue again Sunday.

Possible locations include Slaughterhouse Canyon on the East Shore, the Luther Pass Campground off of Highway 89 S near South Lake Tahoe, the west side of Highway 89 N near Tahoma, and near D.L. Bliss State Park on the West Shore. Operations are ongoing and depend on weather, staffing, and conditions. Locations could vary due to changing conditions.
