The Carson City Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a telephone scam where a man claiming to be a law officer is calling and telling people they missed jury duty and they will go to jail unless they immediately pay a fine.
Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said at least five residents have been contacted regarding this scam and warns that people should not fall for it.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office will not call you for any activity of the courts, the first clue of scam, said Furlong. Secondly, receiving a call from someone, regardless of caller ID, does not assure you that you are speaking to that agency or person.
The scam is similar to the one reported to the Carson City Sheriff's Office on Feb. 1 where a man posing as a lieutenant was telling residents that they will go to jail unless they use a credit card or money order to pay for traffic tickets.
Anyone receiving this type of call should immediately inform the Sheriff’s Office by calling (775) 887-2500. Furlong urges residents not to make any arrangements to make a payment to anyone that you do not know.
