Application deadline nears for Carson City Sheriff's Office Citizens Academy

Community members interested in law enforcement or those who may have wondered how the Carson City Sheriff's Office operates, the Citizens Academy is an good opportunity to experience the wide range of duties at the department, said Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The application deadline for the Carson City Sheriff's Office Citizens Academy is 5 p.m. Jan. 31, 2014. The next academy begins Feb. 5.

The informative academy explains what the sheriff's office does, how it functions, and the role community policing plays in Carson City. Participants will tour the detention and communication centers, learn about patrol operations, arrest procedures, defensive tactics and units specializing in abatement, illegal drugs and reducing graffiti.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office will host the Citizens Academy from Feb. 4 to March 26. Classes will be held on Wednesday evenings, 6 to 9 p.m. in the Ormsby Room of the sheriff's office, 911 East Musser Street. Some classes may be held at off-site locations.

The Academy is open to adults 18 years and older with preference given to Carson City residents, local merchants and their employees and may be of particular interest to senior citizens. There is no charge for the classes but due to a limited number of openings, some applicants will not be able to attended.
