The Edible Pedal 100 is an all-ages, family-friendly bike ride scheduled for Sept. 15, 2013The 2013 Edible Pedal 100™ is right around the corner, and local pediatrician Dr. Kathleen Christopherson of Northern Nevada Pediatrics is working to promote health and fitness among her patients by donating sponsorships to participate in the 10-mile organized ride.
The Edible Pedal 100™, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Reno Sunrise and edible Reno-Tahoe magazine, is scheduled for Sunday, September 15 and stages from historic Bowers Mansion in Washoe Valley, Nev.
“After completing the 50-mile distance of the Edible Pedal 100™ last year it seemed like a great idea to form a partnership,” Christopherson said. “We both have similar missions and work hard promoting a healthy lifestyle and nutritious food choices for children and adults.”
She added, “My biggest hope for doing this is that it opens my patients up to the idea of bicycling as a form of fun exercise. Focusing on overall health, good nutrition and staying active are important for everyone – young and old.”
To date, Dr. Christopherson has 15 patients signed-up to participate. They range in age from seven-years-old to 14-years old. Of the 15, none have ever had the opportunity to participate in an organized cycling event.
“As I began offering sponsorships to my patients I learned that, Issac, a 12-year-old boy, loves to bike.” Christopherson said. “The fun part of sponsoring him is that he already loves to bike, and now he’ll get exposure to an organized ride. I bet he will love the camaraderie and excitement of an organized ride, and the goody bag won’t hurt either!”
Edible Pedal 100™ is a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Reno Sunrise. Proceeds raised are given back to the Northern Nevada community. Past beneficiaries include: Urban Roots Garden Classrooms, Reno High School Sustainable Agriculture and Urban Garden, Pine Middle School Garden Club, and Carson City 4-H. The event provides scholarship funding to the Washoe County Academy of Art, Careers and Technology, Hug High School, Carson City High School, Douglas High School and the University of Nevada, Reno chapter of Sigma Nu. Additionally, the event supports the Rotary Youth Exchange, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards and the Rotary Middle School Leadership Program.
