A U.S. Marine Corps veteran and Carson City resident died Monday in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash on the roadway of Brown Drive and Industrial Parkway in Mound House.
Anthony Laffoon, 26, died of injuries from the crash, which was reported at 6:21 p.m. Monday. He was taken by Care Flight. Family members said he died while he was en route to Renown Medical Center in Reno. Family members say he was not wearing a motorcycle helmet at the time of the crash.
Laffoon, a father of three children, was a U.S. Marine veteran who had tours of duty in the Middle East before returning to Northern Nevada in 2010, family members said.
Lyon County Sheriff's Office, Central Lyon County Fire Protection District and Care Flight responded.
Lt. Rob Hall of the Dayton Patrol Division of the Lyon County Sheriff's Office said an autopsy is being conducted to determine how Laffoon died. While not knowing the results of the autopsy, Hall said that in many motorcycle crashes he has worked on over the years, helmets generally protect riders from blunt force trauma injuries to the head and brain and that a helmet could have saved his life.
