Some evacuations as fire swells to 300 acres in Silver City

UPDATE 4:50PM: Jeff Pace, Lyon County Manager reports a unified command of Central Lyon Fire, BLM, Storey County Fire and Lyon County has been established to fight the fire in the American Canyon drainage area below Silver City.

Highway 342 is closed. LCSO has initiated voluntary evacuations in the area of Highway 341 and 342 south. A shelter is being opened at Dayton High School and is being operated by Lyon County Human Services and American Red Cross. Lone Mountain Veterinary Hospital in Carson City is providing shelter for their small animals affected by the fire. For information, call Margie Quirk at (775) 315-3174.

There are a dozen fire agencies on this fire with 20 plus engines and tenders, 3 aircraft and 3 dozers. Structures threatened include numerous historic mining areas, according to Sierra Interagency Dispatch Center. No structures are threatened in the town of Silver City, said Pace.

KTVN Channel 2 reports 25 homes have been evacuated but officials said none are in immediate danger.

The fire was reported at 1:30 p.m. according to Sierra Front.

UPDATE 4:40PM: Multiple structures are threatened in the area of Silver City where a fire that began Sunday afternoon has grown to 300 acres, a Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center spokesperson said.

There are no current evacuations for Silver City. Some evacuations have been ordered for the areas nearest to the flames, especially in the American Canyon drainage area where the fire is primarily burning. There are a couple of homes, plus some camp trailers and old mining camps where people live, said Elayn Briggs, Sierra Front spokesperson. They are instructed to leave, she said.

The fire is reported now to be 300 acres, with Highway 341 closed from Highway 50 to Virginia City. The truck route is opened for people to get out of the area.

There are three aircraft on the fire, four have been ordered. Of the three on the fire, one is a Type 1 heavy lift helicopter; another smaller helicopter and a single engine air tanker. Two medium air tankers have been ordered as well as an additional helicopter. There are five hand crews on the fire and four more crews have been ordered.

This fire is jointly being managed by the Bureau of Land Management and Central Lyon County and they are being assisted by Storey County, Carson City and other local fire agencies.

The fire is burning hot, dry and winds are erratic. The fire is below Silver City in the drainage.

There has also been ordered a Type 3 Sierra Front Team, they are in briefing and will be with the current group by 8 p.m., Briggs said.

UPDATE: A wildland fire in the area of Pedlar and Highway 342 in Silver City has been reported by the Lyon County Office of Emergency Management.

As of last report, at around 3:05 p.m. the fire had swelled from 25 to 75 acres. Air resources including helicopters and an air tanker have been ordered, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.

Firefighters are arriving on scene, including those from Carson City, East Fork Fire and Storey County. According to Lyon County officials on their Facebook page, there have been no reports of evacuations or structures threatened at this time.

According to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center, the fire was reported at 1:30 p.m. and aviation resources have been used.

A spokeswoman for Sierra Front said helicopters and air tankers are being used. The fire is visible from Carson City and Dayton residents report smoke blowing in the area.
