While we missed the bulk of rain that hit Northern Nevada and the Sierra this week, we won't be able to escape a heat wave that will envelope the Carson City region beginning Friday.
Have your swamp coolers, ceiling fans and air conditioners ready as the cool weather ends when a strong high pressure system will build over the desert southwest on Thursday, then move over Nevada, according to the National Weather Service. This will bring hot weather beginning Friday, with highs climbing above 100 degrees across the Nevada valleys and rising the 90s for the Sierra and Lake Tahoe Basin.
The weather service suggests this heat wave is likely to set new record highs, and may set a new all-time record high for the month of June at the Reno Tahoe International Airport.
Here's a link for specific highs and lows at selected locations around the Sierra and western Nevada.
To prepare for the heat wave here are a few reminders:
— Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol and caffeine.
— Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
— Avoid strenuous activities during the afternoon and early evening.
— Check on the elderly.
— Leave pets in a cool place with plenty of water.
