Suspect who stole purse, credit cards from car at daycare center sought by Carson City detectives

UPDATE: A credible tip surfaced Thursday afternoon regarding the suspect vehicle, a sheriff's office detective said. The vehicle is a tan or beige 2010-2012 Mercedes SUV, with dark tinted windows. The vehicle was without a front license plate and its back plate is possibly California. The vehicle circled the daycare parking lot multiple times, where the suspect then is believed to have parked across the street before entering the victim's vehicle.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office Investigations Division is asking for the public's help in identifying a male suspect wanted in connection to the theft of a purse, credit cards and phone that happened Thursday morning at an East John Street child care center.

At around 7:50 a.m. the suspect stole the victim's purse, phone and keys from their vehicle parked at the daycare center. Carson City sheriff's investigators tracked the phone, keys and purse, minus the credit cards, to the McDonald's on Winnie Lane, where they were located in the trash.

The victim's credit cards were used later at Walgreens on South Virginia Street in Reno, as seen in this surveillance photo above. (Click on photo to enlarge.) The suspect was possibly driving a brown SUV but that hasn't been confirmed. The suspect was believed to be seen in the parking lot across from the daycare center shortly before the theft.

At approximately 1:39 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, 2020, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office dispatched deputies to the Cardon Lane area of Yerington after receiving a 911 call from a subject who said his neighbor had just come to his house brandishing a handgun and threatening him with it.

Deputies arrived shortly thereafter and made contact with the suspect who refused commands to comply with their instructions, including putting his hands up. The suspect advanced on the deputies and after several attempts at less-than-lethal means to illicit compliance, the suspect pulled his gun on the deputies.

Three deputies responded by employing lethal force to stop the threat. Shortly afterward, the suspect was pronounced deceased on scene. No injuries to deputies or neighbors have been reported.

At this time, the Nevada Division of Investigation is taking over the investigation along with the help of the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office forensics crime scene unit. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is also assisting in the investigation.

At this time the names of all involved are being withheld as this investigation is currently underway. More details will be provided as the investigation progresses.

Carson City’s 'The Wheelhouse' moves to new location near Mills Park

Carson City’s The Wheelhouse, which specializes in all things skating, scootering, bicycling and more, has moved their location to 1800 E. William Street, Suite No. 1, to be closer to the Mills Park Skate Park and more centrally located within town.

The Wheelhouse has always been heavily involved in the Carson City community, from hosting skate and scooter competitions to one-on-one training sessions with kids, all with the value of instilling confidence and camaraderie in mind.

According to Matt Bartak, who co-owns The Wheelhouse with Teak Dopf, the move was important to them so they could be closer to the Skate Park, located within Mills Park, and to have a more central location to better offer their services to the community.

The Wheelhouse sponsors local youths in skating, BMX riding and scootering, and has around ten sponsees currently. Through their efforts, their Wheelhouse team members are able to secure free equipment, parts, helmets, and more.

In the last few years, The Wheelhouse has been an active member of the community, hosting local skate competitions, sponsoring the Skate Jam, providing prizes to Carson City Safe Routes, family friendly celebrations and more.

The Wheelhouse opened five years ago at their previous location near the Greenhouse Garden Center, and has been partnering with the city on various family-friendly events since then.

“It’s important we show that skaters aren’t just a bunch of punk kids, but that they really add positivity and camaraderie into the community,” said Bartak.

One way that Team Wheelhouse achieves that goal is through training. Bartak and Dopf host training sessions with kids one-on-one, at any age so long as they are able to stand on a board or scoot on a scooter. Bartak often takes the new trainees to the skate park, and when the veteran skater kids see someone training, they often come up and introduce themselves to the new skater and offer words of encouragement.

“We don’t ask them to do it,” said Bartak. “That’s just the way they are, they support each other.”

If anyone is interested in getting their little skaters involved with The Wheelhouse, or if they simply want to find out more, you can stop by the Wheelhouse’s new location at 1800 E. William Street, or follow them on facebook at fb.com/ccwheelhouse, or follow them on instagram at @ccwheelhouse.

You can also find them at the upcoming family-friendly Skate Jam the Wheelhouse sponsors, hosted by Jub Jub's Thirst Parlor in Reno next month on Feb. 29.

Carson City's Proscenium Players Inc. theater group presents The Odd Couple in February

$

Carson City’s theater company, Proscenium Players Inc., is bringing the female version of The Odd Couple to the BAC’s Black Box Theater from February 14-23 for two weekend’s worth of performances.

The Odd Couple follows the story of two mismatched roommates — one neat and uptight, the other messy and easygoing—and their antics as they try to live with one another. The play was written by Neil Simon and originally premiered on Broadway in 1965. The show has seen numerous revivals since then, has been adapted in television series, and in 1985 it was rewritten so the roommates were a pair of women instead of men.

Florence Unger and Olive Madison are at it again in PPI’s performance of The Odd Couple. A few changes have been made to the original version: instead of a poker party, Ms. Madison invites the girls over for Trivial Pursuit, and The Pidgeon sister have been replaced by the Constanzuela brothers. However, the original story and hilarity of the show remain unchanged.

Come to the BAC’s Black Box Theatre, located at 449 W. King Street in Carson City, to see this wonderful performance. Show times will be 7 p.m. on Feb. 14-15, 21-22 and 2 p.m. on Feb. 16 and Feb. 23. Tickets prices for the show are only $16 for seniors, students, and members, $18 in advance, and $20 at the door.

If you have any questions feel free to call the BAC at 775-883-1976 or stop by the BAC during the week!

Finding Stacia: A breath of new life (final in a Partnership Carson City 3-part series)

Editor’s Note: This is the third in a series about Stacia Nepper, the new deputy director for Partnership Carson City. She hopes her story of overcoming addiction will inspire others to seek help. Reach her or find additional resources at pcccarson.org. See Part 1 here and Part 2 here.

In the chaos of jolting awake to the crunch of metal, Stacia Nepper was sure she saw her 2-year-old baby fly past her. She froze in panic.

The resentment she’d harbored against her child for coming into the world unwanted and forever chaining Stacia to a man she never wanted to see again, vanished in that moment.

It all became so clear. Emma was her life. Emma was the only thing that mattered.

It was more than a relief — it was a breath of new life — that washed over Stacia when she heard Emma cry from the backseat.

She reached back just to make sure, and felt the warm skin of her daughter. Without a second thought, she scooped Emma up and cuddled her baby into her lap.

Then she started driving again.

She dozed in and out for the next 60 miles. Just as she arrived in Fallon, a cop pulled her over. Reports had come in of a driver swerving all over the road.

Somehow, before the police officer walked up to her window, Stacia was able to get 2-year-old Emma in her car seat.

When questioned about the dents in her car, Stacia lied and said they were from a wreck a week ago. She convinced the officer she was just tired from a long night.

The cop agreed to forego a ticket if Stacia would pull over and take a nap. She quickly agreed.

She called a friend to meet her and take Emma home. Instead of sleeping, Stacia spent the remainder of the night picking her face in the rearview mirror — and freaking out.

With the clarity of the morning light, she drove straight to her mom’s house.

“I need to go to rehab,” she told her mom.

Her mother had been waiting to hear those words, and right away went to work finding a drug rehabilitation center for her girl.

She found the perfect fit, but it had a one-month waiting list.

Stacia left her daughter with her parents and spent the next month on a bender, her final dance with her demons.
She only saw her daughter once that month. Stacia’s parents threw Emma a birthday party in the park for her third birthday.

There were streamers, balloons, gifts and lots of guests — the seemingly perfect celebration.

But no one from Emma’s dad’s family attended, and Stacia herself was just a guest, a reluctant one at that. She endured the party out of obligation, but spent the afternoon just biding her time.

Still, when it came time to enter rehab, Stacia was ready. She knew she had this one chance.

She hasn’t touched meth since that day — Oct. 1, 2016.

Now, she shares her story of loss and redemption with students and addicts as a peer-support specialist in her new job as deputy director of Partnership Carson City.

“Some people say relapse is a part of recovery,” she said, “but that’s not an option for me. I wouldn’t come back. I’d be dead, I know that.”

Mostly, she wants addicts to know they are not alone.

“I’m just someone who has been in their shoes and can relate to them,” she said. “I offer them a helping hand, a sign of hope.”

It’s not that she never thinks about drugs, the smoke from electronic cigarettes particularly elicits memories of the meth cloud. And memories of her cousin Anthony still haunt her.

“I think about him every day, at least for a minute then I can’t anymore. Otherwise, I’ll cry and I’ll cry and I’ll cry,” she said. “The difference is, I feel it this time.”

She doesn’t have time to dwell too deeply. Between her job and taking care of Emma, she stays busy. Plus, she has a sixth birthday party to plan.

“She wants a hover board or a tablet, but is she too young?” Stacia wonders.

Other decisions have already been made. The party will be at Stacia’s dad’s house in Hawthorne, where a giant pool will be set up in the backyard.

All of Stacia’s family will be there, as will Emma’s dad, who is also clean. He will bring his girlfriend and both of their families.

“I am so lucky that Emma has such a great dad and such a great family,” Stacia said. “I’m lucky she doesn’t remember any of the bad times. But I still have a lot of making up to do.”

Partnership Carson City offers resources for drug treatment
Relapse is common among people recovering from drug addiction. According to National Institute on Drug Abuse findings, 40-60 percent of those in addiction recovery experience a relapse after completing rehabilitation. Visit the pcccarson.org community resource guide for treatment centers near you.

Carson City Weather: Perfect day for Sledding

$

The first winter snowstorm of 2020 has passed, and there shouldn’t be any more precipitation coming as the storm continues to move east.

The weather today will have a high of 38 and a low of 24, with partly sunny skies. The winds have also died down, with a breezy 4-5 mph being the top out for the day.

All of these conditions point to one perfect activity today: sledding! The foothills received several more inches than the valley floor, and it is powdery and perfect for the time old tradition of hurling yourself down a frozen slope on a flimsy piece of plastic or wood.

Top off the day with a nice cup of hot cocoa and some soup or chili and it’s shaping up to a perfect snowy winter day.

Carson City couple arrested following domestic battery involving knife, screw gun

A 28-year-old Carson City woman and a 30-year-old Carson City man were arrested Thursday morning. The woman was arrested for battery with a deadly weapon, possession of a dangerous drug without a prescription, domestic battery first offense, and obstructing an officer; the man was arrested for possession of a dangerous drug without a prescription, and a contempt of court warrant.

According to the report, Amber Deann Taylor and the man were arrested after deputies responded to the area of Hot Springs Road in reference to a woman screaming for help.

While deputies were on scene, a man arrived to the home and deputies spoke with him. He said he lived in the home and had been gone for about an hour. Deputies asked if anyone else was in the home and he said yes, his friend and his friend’s girlfriend were home and had been staying with him for a few days.

Deputies approached the house and knocked on the door. While waiting for a response, deputies heard a woman screaming for help that sounded as though it were coming from outside.

Deputies went around to the side of the house and spoke with the woman, who was looking out of a window and said she had locked herself inside of the bedroom to get away from her boyfriend who had just attacked her. While deputies attempted to speak with her, she talked over them and said they were “too late as always.”

Deputies asked again if the man was still inside, and she said no, she had seen him run down the street prior to the deputies arrival. Deputies asked the woman to meet them at the front of the residence so they could speak with her.

At the front door, deputies asked if they could check the residence to make sure no one else was there, and she said no. However, another deputy advised the man they’d spoken to, who was the resident of the home, said he wanted a security sweep of the residence due to the unknown circumstances that were taking place.

Deputies told the woman they would be checking the residence and she said “no you’re not” and attempted to run inside the residence. Deputies grabbed the woman’s left arm and pulled her out of the door. She refused to comply with directions and was placed in handcuffs.

Deputies told her they were there to help her but she needed to calm down. They asked her again what had happened, and she said her boyfriend was sleeping and she cooked him breakfast. She said she woke him up and he became upset and started yelling at her. She said he then grabbed her head and pushed her to the ground.

She told deputies she grabbed a knife and held it in front of her to keep him away, and then locked herself in the bedroom because she was afraid.

Deputies noted she kept speaking over the deputies, and it was “extremely difficult to understand what she was trying to convey.” Deputies asked if she had been drinking, and she said yes, she had been drinking earlier in the morning. She provided a PBT and blew a .097.

Deputies asked if she had sustained any injuries, and she said her lip was cut and her right ear was sore, but denied medical attention. Deputies observed a small cut to the inside of her lip.

Other deputies advised they had located the man inside of the residence and detained him in a patrol vehicle and advised he had several visible injuries on his person. A records check also indicated he had a confirmed warrant out of this arrest.

Deputies spoke with him about what had occurred. He said he was asleep when his girlfriend woke him up to eat. He got up and went to the kitchen, and the woman was upset and started yelling at him. He said she “lost it” and started attacking him. Deputies asked him if he knew why she was attacking him and he said no.

He told deputies she then picked up an ashtray and threw it at him, but it missed. She then grabbed a battery operated screw gun and struck him in the hand. After, she grabbed a knife and started swinging it around in the air. He said he was up against the counter and could not move. He then became fearful so he grabbed ahold of the knife and removed it from Amber.

Deputies observed a total of seven injuries on the man: a puncture wound on the right hand, scratch mark on the left side of his back, abrasion on the left side rib cage area, bite mark on the left shoulder blade, abrasion on left upper chest (neck area), abrasion on the right side of the chest, and multiple scratches on the upper lip. He said he did not need medical treatment, and that he was just trying to protect himself.

Due to the injuries and the woman’s reluctance to communicate with deputies, they determined her to be the primary physical aggressor. She was taken into custody and booked without incident.

At the jail, the woman told deputies she is a struggling alcoholic and wants help.

The man was taken into custody on the warrant. During the processing of the scene, deputies located 8-Gabapentin and 1-Quetiapine prescription pills in the bedroom occupied by the couple, which were not in a container and both denied ownership.

Bail for the woman: $36,049

Bail for the man: $3,500 cash only

Partnership Carson City youth high school program participant Nancy Mejorado, 17, is creating a mock teenage bedroom for parents and community leaders to better know how to spot drugs among youth belongings.

The mock bedroom, which is Mejorado’s Carson High School senior project, opens to the public 2:30-7 p.m. Jan. 22-23 at Partnership’s main office, 1925 N. Carson St.

"I wanted to design a hands-on experience to show parents how teens may be hiding drugs in their rooms with the goal to prevent overdoses and further drug use in Carson City's youth,” Mejorado said.

The bedroom items range from seven different types of vape pens to a bottle of Advil that could have been taken to relieve a hangover headache.

Samantha Szoyka, youth program coordinator for PCC, said that school resource officers will be available as well to answer questions.

“Mock bedrooms are developed in such as a way as to provide a real-life interactive setting,” Szoyka said, “to help parents recognize signs of physical or mental health risks, identify warning signs of distress or red flags of abuse, that can sometimes be easily missed.”

Mejorado is a two-year member of Partnership’s high school youth advocacy club called Represent. The program at Carson High is dedicated to the prevention of suicide, drugs, alcohol and tobacco.

Middle school programs are available as well at Carson Middle School and Eagle Valley Middle School. The programs are funded by PCC and meet once a week during lunch.

On Wednesday, January 15, 2020, at approximately 12:25 PM, NHP Troopers were dispatched to a serious injury crash involving a single vehicle at IR-80 and the Virginia Street off-ramp (Exit 13) in Reno.

Preliminary investigation shows a gray 2016 Ford Escape was traveling westbound on IR-80 in the far right travel lane approaching the Virginia Street off-ramp when its driver and sole occupant allowed the vehicle to exit the roadway to the right and enter the dirt area on the north side of the guardrail.

The vehicle continued to travel west in the dirt area, striking a light pole, then striking a concrete bridge support where it came to rest.

The driver (Mary Sauer, a 70-year-old Fallon resident) was declared deceased at a local area hospital.

Complete Streets Project: Image of South Carson Street facing south

The South Carson Complete Streets Project design is complete, Carson City Public Works and the project contractor, Sierra Nevada Construction, Inc., will be hosting a pre-construction meeting to present the anticipated construction schedule and the completed project design.

The meeting will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2020, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, in the Sierra Room, located at 851 E. William St., Carson City.

The Nevada Department of Transportation recently transferred the commercial corridor to the City, giving the City the opportunity to transform the corridor to provide safer travel opportunities for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists; improve access to abutting businesses; and prepare Carson City for Smart City advancements.

The approximate project limits are from the intersection of South Carson Street and 5th Street, south to the intersection of South Carson Street and Appion Way.

The project includes pedestrian safety measures, ADA-compliant sidewalks and curb ramps, narrowed travel lanes, a buffered multi-use path, dedicated bicycle facilities, a roundabout, critical improvements to stormwater infrastructure, improved business access, street lighting, enhanced signals, upgrades to the water and sewer systems, and fiber optic communications improvements that will complete the City’s core communications ring. Construction is anticipated to start late February of this year.

The meeting will include a presentation on the South Carson Street design, project schedule, and discuss various communication tools for the public to stay connected during the construction process.

It is the goal of the Project team to keep citizens informed, engaged and involved throughout the construction process. To receive e-notifications visit carsonproud.com and click the subscribe button or to receive text notifications simply text “Carson Proud” to 31996.
