Record breaker at Topaz Lake: Genoa man catches 14-plus pound rainbow trout at opener

Hello fellow anglers. I am here to tell you, Topaz Lake was a great opener this year. The weather on Jan. 1 surprised many anglers as we experienced some extreme winds as well as some good rain in the afternoon. But for those who stuck it out, they were all rewarded with a double rainbow.

My fishing partner Tom Blotter from Minden and I got on the lake at 6:30 a.m. We trolled the lake with Rapalas and jigs and by the end of the day, we had caught and released 39 trout up to 18 inches. Tom had a nice fish up to the boat which would have been in the 20 plus inch range.

But unfortunately had a short distance release. I counted a little over 325 shore anglers and 39 boats on the lake around 11 a.m. Everyone we spoke with had caught fish and spirits were high. The rain that came in the afternoon did not dampen any spirits.

We saw family's, friends and met some new angler friends. Tom and I kept our campers at the Topaz Landing Marina and moored the boat for 3 wonderful days of fishing. By the end of the trip we had caught and released 84 trout. The fishing had been a little slower on the proceeding days, but still very productive.

On Jan. 2, Joe Lash from Carson City was shore fishing with his girlfriend Lisa Edmonds and caught a nice 9 pound, 2.25 ounce rainbow on Powerbait.

The big news was yet to to come with Patrick Prudhel from Genoa. Patrick was trolling the lake and caught a nice 14 pound, nearly 10-ounce rainbow trout. This my fellow anglers may be the new Topaz Lake record. According to Nevada Department of Wildlife's Facebook page, it is a record for the lake, breaking the old one of 13 pounds, 8-ounces caught by Tony Hemmah on April 1, 1998.

Patrick’s fish is a hefty one, with the state record not too far out at 16 pounds 8 ounces from Ruby Lake NWR on February 10, 2011 by Mike Mott, according to NDOW.

With the 50,000 pounds of trout planted by the NDOW and the hold overs in Topaz, this year may be phenomenal for fishing. The lake level has come up five feet as compared to last years opening day.

Topaz Lake offers camping (with and without hooks ups) and boat launching at the Douglas County Park on the north east side. The Topaz Landing Marina offers camping with full hookups, Boat launch and mooring on the north west side of the lake just behind the Topaz Lodge, they can be reached at 775-266-3550. Anglers may use a valid California or Nevada fishing licence and can fish from shore or from a boat.

We saw anglers fishing from a sailboat, and even one local angler that drove his tractor down and shore fished. Now, even though the Topaz Lodge is not holding its annual fishing derby this year. You can bring your catch to the general store to have your fish weighed in and have your picture taken.

The store will have a angler wall of fame board showing off the catches from anglers. and have an angler bragging board with the top big fish weighed in to date. If you need up to date fishing information, call or stop by the Topaz Lodge General Store. Their phone number is 775-266-3338.

For those that get on the Topaz Lodge wall of fame, you also have the chance to have your picture here in the Naw hall of fame. Good luck on your next fishing adventure. I hope to see you on the lake. If you have a picture of your catch, send it to jeff@carsonnow.org. Good fishin' and tight lines.

Carson City recognized as number one town in America to open small businesses

Carson City has been recognized as the number one town in America to open small businesses, according to a survey done by Advisor Smith, which is based on the number of small businesses being opened in a city compared with their population.

According to the survey, the study focused on businesses that employ at least one paid employee, which excludes entities like financial or real estate holding companies.

The most small-business creation could be found in the west, with the top 7 states for business creation being western states. The top three went to Montana, Washington, and California.

The survey was broken down into small (less than 150K), midsize (150K-500K) and big cities (over 500K), and even though our modest town has always hovered around 60K, we apparently knocked it out of the park.

The number two slot in small cities when to Missoula, MT, followed by Idaho Falls, ID and Wenatchee, WA.

According to the survey, Carson City had 4.61 new businesses per 1,000 residents, which still beat out the rate for midsize and large cities! The second overall for small business creation went to Boulder, CO, with a rate of 4.52 businesses per 1,000 population.

Carson City Parks, Recreation, Open Space invites you to give back to your community on this year’s MLK Day of Service!

Recently, the department has found numerous large and detrimental dumpsites in the canyons near East Silver Saddle Ranch.

These are areas where people have unlawfully dumped trash of all kinds (old toys, furniture, tires, plastic bottles, etc.).

These foreign materials litter the natural landscapes and contaminate the Carson River. We ask you to join us in our efforts to clean-up and restore this natural area.

On this 25th annual MLK Day of Service, Americans across the country are rolling up their sleeves in service to honor Dr. King. Please join us in bettering our community.

Date, Time, Location: January 20th, 2020 9am-12pm (approximately) at East Silver Saddle Ranch off Sierra Vista Lane. Park in the lots located about 1.1 miles down the road once you turn onto Sierra Vista Lane from Carson River Road. Some snacks and drinks will be provided by Costco.

Need to know: Please bring proper clothing for the weather, water, and closed toed shoes. Minors must have a parent present. We will provide trash bags, gloves, trash grabbers, and any other necessary tools and gear. We ask that pets stay at home because of the risk associated with the unknown items at the dumpsites.

A 48-year-old Carson City man is facing additional counts of sexual assault and lewdness with children, as well as violating bail conditions after his initial arrest in mid-December for felony lewdness with a child.

Eugene Thomas Nichols Jr. was arrested in mid December for lewdness with a child under the age of 14. According to the arrest report, the additional charges were filed after the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division alerted Special Enforcement Team Deputies that they were applying for an arrest warrant for Nichols and two further counts of sexual assault on a child under the age of 14.

According to deputies, they knew that Nichols was out on bail and went to his residence to arrest him on the additional warrants. A surveillance team was set up, but when they saw Nichols getting into a car, they decided they did not want him to be mobile in a vehicle and detained him.

Deputies drove onto the driveway and the yard with emergency lights on and gave verbal commands to Nichols to get out of the car, which he ignored.

Nichols was then taken out of the car and placed in handcuffs.

His bail is set at $1,000,000 cash only

Warrants:

— A 40-year-old Reno man, Trevor Tomlinson, was arrested on a felony violation of a condition of bail warrant issued out of Justice District Court on Sept. 27, 2019.

Bobcat spotted resting in Southwest Carson after a lunch of a neighbor's pet duck

According to Carson City resident Bob Bondiett, a bobcat was spotted in a residential neighborhood taking a snooze under a cherry tree after the wild cat made itself a lunch out of a neighbor's pet duck.

First and foremost, our condolences go out to the duck's family.

This report came just a day after a mountain lion was spotted in northwest Carson City in the Timberline area.

During the winter months, when food sources in the hills become more scarce, it's not unusual for predators to make their way down to the valley to hunt for food. Unfortunately, this often means family pets become prey.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife encourages residents to keep children and pets close to you, to be aware of their surroundings, keep pets on a leash when walking them, and to bring pets indoors at night.

It's also advised to not leave any sort of food or attractant outdoors, which may encourage prey animals to come to your yard. It's these prey animals themselves that will then attract the larger predatory animals like big cats and coyotes.

It is always advised that if you spot a predatory animal in a residential neighborhood to report it to authorities, such as NDOW, or if there is an emergency, to call dispatch or 911. When confronted with a big cat or coyote, NDOW advises making the animal feel unwelcome by making yourself appear large and scaring it away, from a safe distance.

City to return 'Brewery Arts Center' property to BAC owners, so long as all religious activity is prohibited

At the upcoming Carson City Board of Supervisor's meeting, a discussion regarding the reconveyance of the property housing the Brewery Arts Center from the city to the BAC itself will be held, so long as any religious activity will continue to be prohibited at the site.

A reconveyance is the act of returning or the transfer of a title to a property to a borrower once a mortgage or lease has fully been paid. The city has held ownership of the property since 1977, and has been leasing the property to the BAC since 1979.

A “Covenant of Use” for the Brewery Arts Center is to be discussed, requiring that any explicitly religious activity be prohibited at the property.

According to the report, on Sept. 19, 2019 the Board adopted a resolution declaring it to be in the best interest of Carson City and its residents to offer the reconveyance of the Brewery Arts Center, which had originally donated the property to the city. This was subject to written confirmation that city had met the conditions of the holding period and other conditions of the original grant obtained by the city prior to the reconveyance of the deed.

Since that time, the Economic Development Administration (EDA) has advised the city that in order to request a release of the property after the useful life of the project and without repayment of the Federal Share, the city must record a Covenant of Use on the property.

The Covenant of Use states that the property will not be used for explicitly religious activities in violation of applicable Federal law, and will not be used for any purpose that would violate the nondiscrimination requirements set forth in 13 CFR 302.20.

On June 30, 1977, the city accepted a deed of dedication for 449 West King Street from the Carson City Art Alliance (later renamed Brewery Arts Center) for the purpose of the property being used and maintained forever as a place to create, display and contain works of art.

The Brewery Arts Center officially opened on June 9, 1979, and since that time the property has been leased back to the Brewery Arts Center to conduct arts and craft programs, workshops, theater performances, meetings, lectures, and educational classes.

According to the city report, because there is no municipal use needed for this property, on September 19, 2019 the Board adopted a resolution declaring it to begin the best interest to offer the reconveyance of the property back to the Brewery Arts Center.

A 44-year-old Carson City woman and a 61-year-old Carson City man were arrested in the 2600 block of Blossom View Lane Friday afternoon for suspicion of felony child abuse, possession with intent to sell a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and trafficking a controlled substance level 1.

According to the report, Robin Marie Jensen and Steven Scott Brown were arrested by Tri-NET Narcotic Task Force detectives after receiving information that Jensen and Brown were actively selling methamphetamine out of their residence.

The information stated that the pair lived at the house with their five-year-old child. Detectives learned that during drug transactions, the child was present.

Tri-NET Detectives and Special Enforcement Team deputies established surveillance in the area. After several contacts with people leaving the residence, a search warrant was granted for the residence.

During the search warrant the following items were located:

Garage:
Methamphetamine pipe with residue located in the roof access door of the garage. A box containing numerous water pipes and glass pipes were located in the attic.

Kitchen:
A package of small ziplock baggies were located on the kitchen table along with a black digital scale missing a lid located in the kitchen hutch.

In the first bedroom:
One soy sauce water pipe with methamphetamine residue containing water located on a nightstand, along with a Tupperware container six glass methamphetamine pipes with residue, one white vinegar water pipe with residue, two glass steps to water pipes with residue, and another Tupperware containing multiple yellow Rx tablets.

In the second bedroom, occupied by Jensen, Brown and the child:
Two black digital scales with methamphetamine residue was located on the entertainment center next to one mirror with residue. A water pipe was located in a pink bucket on the floor. A stem to a water pipe with residue was located on top of plastic drawers on the northeast side of the bed. Plastic baggies commonly used to sell or transport narcotics was located in the left drawer of the entertainment center. Three water pipes located on the entertainment center were found on the entertainment center as well. Three additional methamphetamine pipes were located, and a black lock box containing small plastic baggies, two methamphetamine pipes, a tooter straw and a plastic baggie with 6.8 grams of methamphetamine was located on the bed.

All items were seized and later booked into evidence.

The child was confirmed to be at school and not at the residence during the time of the search warrant.

However, living conditions throughout the residence were deemed to present an immediate danger to the safety and welfare of the child, according to SET deputies.

Throughout the residence, deputies located multiple sanitary, hazardous chemicals and illegal drug substances that are within reach of the child.

Cleaning chemicals, an unknown green liquid chemical substance, piles of trash, an axe, a bayonet, rotten food, a hand saw, a butane torch, spray paint, butane fuel, a bottle of bug poison fogger, boxes of medications, hypodermic needles, razor blades, multiple glass methamphetamine pipes and homemade pipe apparatuses to smoke methamphetamine and more were all located within reach of the child.

The overall condition of the house was unsanitary and showed no signs of being cleaned, according to the report.

Brown admitted that the child was present during transactions and use of methamphetamine in the residence on multiple occasions, and the child was often left in the presence of unknown persons without his knowledge. He stated people would come to the house without his knowledge to use drugs.

Bail for each: $48,637.
