A 58-year-old Sparks man was arrested in the area of Robinson and Saliman Friday night for DUI first, failure to maintain a lane, and driving without a valid license.

The man was arrested after deputies were dispatched to the area on report of a possible DUI driver who was traveling west on William Street.

Deputies located the vehicle and performed a traffic stop for failure to maintain a lane. Deputies made contact with the man, who appeared confused and disoriented and could not provide his driver’s license to deputies.

Deputies asked the man to step out of the vehicle. The man needed to use the car for balance as he was unsteady on his feet, the report states. Deputies noticed a strong odor of alcohol emitting form his breath, and his speech was slurred as he spoke.

The man stated he did not want to take a field sobriety test, but agreed to provide a preliminary breath sample, which resulted in a 0.288 BAC. Bail: $1,277.

— A 42-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the 3200 block of Market Street on a warrant for violating his suspended sentence, as well as obstructing a public officer.

According to the report, deputies were dispatched to a local big-box department store on reports of an unwanted subject. Deputies met with security officers who told them the man was harassing customers inside of the store and the employees wanted him trespassed.

At first, the man gave a false name to deputies, using the correct last name but a different first name. Dispatch advised that name was clear of all warrants, but that a man with a different first name matching his description had a warrant. Dispatch advised the man on the warrant had a tattoo on his chest of a name. Deputies asked to see the man's chest, on which was the tattoo dispatch had described.

The warrant was issued out of Carson City Justice Court on March 28.

Deputies arrested the man on the warrant as well as for obstructing a public officer for giving a false name. Bail: $3,412; $3,000 cash only.

Warrants:

— A 34-year-old Gardnerville man was transported to the Carson City Jail from Douglas County on an outstanding warrant for contempt of court, issued Jan. 3. Bail: $500 cash only.

— A 32-year-old transient man was transported from Churchill County on a Carson City Justice Court warrant issued May 3 for violation of a suspended sentence. Bail: $1,000 cash only.

— A 50-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the area of Lompa Lane and US Highway 50 Friday morning on a contempt of court warrant issued out of Carson City Justice Court June 4.

Deputies arrested the man after they recognized him walking east on Highway 50, and dispatch advised he had an active warrant. Bail: $125 cash only.

UPDATE 1:23PM: Multiple fire crews are on scene working the Prison Hill Fire in southeast Carson City. From the command center it appears the smoke is not as heavy as it was earlier. No word yet on size or containment. The cause is under investigation.

The fire was called into dispatch 12:04 p.m.

Firefighters will be entering into the area of Carson River Road and Golden Eagle Road. The fire is putting up smoke, according to calls to dispatch.

It is unclear at this time how big the fire is or the direction it is burning. Multiple fire engines are responding.

A Carson City Fire Department battalion chief said the fire is visible from Snyder Avenue near the Northern Nevada Correctional Center (NNCC) and has requested additional response, including a helicopter crew to drop water on it.

UPDATE: Firefighters from Carson City, Douglas County and Lyon County and 1 helicopter responded Sunday afternoon to a brush fire in the Prison Hill area. The brush fire was called into dispatch just after noon on Sunday. As of around 1:30 p.m. firefighters had made progress with the help of brush units and a helicopter.

The first photo, taken shortly before firefighters arrived, was taken from the Mexican Dam area looking west.

The second and third photos were taken as crews made progress. The cause is under investigation.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for West Walker River from north of Sonora Junction in Mono County to southern Mason Valley in Lyon County from Tuesday evening June 11, 2019, until the threat has passed.

Lyon County is monitoring the Walker River in coordination with the Walker River Irrigation District. Currently there are low lying areas along the Walker River in Mason Valley that are experiencing minor flooding. No homes are threatened at this time, said Lyon County Manager Jeff Page.

The river will continue to rise for the next several days. Crews will continue to monitor the river. Lyon County officials will provide updates as conditions change.

With temperatures rising well above normal through Wednesday, there will be a return to rapid melting of the high elevation snowpack. This will mean increased flows in the higher elevations and swift, cold flows for rivers and streams in the lower valleys by midweek from Lake Tahoe south through Mono County, according to the National Weather Service.

Due to the considerable snowpack remaining in the Walker River basin, minor flooding is possible later this week on the West Walker River above Topaz Lake. Below Topaz Lake and Bridgeport Reservoir, high flows are expected as well. Reservoir operations will have an influence on the flows through the Mason Valley, but current projections indicate the possibility of minor flooding near the Walker River by late in the week. Peak flows on the West Walker River are expected from late Tuesday night through early Thursday morning while peak flows farther downstream will be late in the week or next weekend.

To the north, there does not appear to be enough snowpack left to produce flooding along the unregulated portions of the Carson River system, or in the Truckee River system, but high flows are still likely for smaller streams in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The high, cold flows may affect hikers and campers in and near the Sierra. The peak flows overnight may catch those camping close to creeks and streams off guard, so campers are advised to avoid setting up camp too close to creeks and streams. Hikers should be alert for snow bridges over creeks in higher elevations.

This year, the Creative Kids Camp at Carson City's Brewery Arts Center is exploring nature through arts and crafts. Children can create a variety of items inspired by nature including garden stepping stones and rock accents.

Dragon flies will soar in and out of a yard. We will capture the wind in a water bottle. And feeding the flighty feathered friends will be fun. And among other crafts, we may find some silly snails. See the video here or below.

Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Jake Lamb is back in the baseball fold with the Triple-A Reno Aces.

Lamb is on a rehabilitation assignment with the Aces after suffering a Grade 2 strain of his left quadriceps muscle on April 5. Lamb injured his quad while legging out a double in the ninth inning on April 3 against the San Diego Padres.

Now back on the field, Lamb went 0-for-3 with strikeouts in the Aces 5-3 victory over the Memphis Redbirds on Star Wars Night Saturday at Greater Nevada Field.

— Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'New Crop 2019' exhibit. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "New Crop 2019", by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sculptor Mark Combs gives viewers two approaches to his metalwork. His earlier distressed metal car-part sculptures are ornamented with soldered rods and bolts reflecting a ruptured system both socially and figuratively. His carefully hammered bone pieces came into shape after hours of forging as a nod to death and celebrations of life. Photographer Frances Melhop documents aging rural structures with classic color photography. In Vanish, her printed enlargements of unnamed 19th century portraits on silk are elevated to fly across our vision like fleeting memories.

— Open Studio Basic Painting at Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students will work on their own paintings from subject matter they have chosen. The instructor, Mark Tompkins, will work one-on-one with each student to help them complete their project from start to finish. Each student must supply their own materials. Students may choose to paint in either water colors, oils, or acrylic paints. This is an open enrollment drop-in class, no need to sign-up. Tuition: $25 per session or $40 for the day. — Carson City Democratic luncheon to spotlight geothermal energy producer. 11:30 a.m. Monday's Democratic luncheon will feature a presentation by the business development team of Ormat Technologies, owner-operator of the Steamboat geothermal complex south of Reno. Ormat designs and builds geothermal and recovered energy generating equipment for power generators in 30 countries around the world. In Africa, Central America and the United States, they supply energy from their own plants to utilities that distribute electricity directly to consumers. This event is in the banquet room of Carson City's Round Table, on Retail Drive just off College Parkway. Oil painting on copper goes back to the 15th century although it is rarely used by contemporary artists. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "The Lay of the Land," by artist Fred Howland in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs now through June 30, 2019. Howland’s passion is to create a sense of time and place through his photographs. He returns to favorite sites to work, like Hope Valley and Genoa, returning to take repeat images in different seasons and lighting. His interest in landscapes go back to his New England roots where he was more comfortable in the outdoors than in school classrooms. Historian Ken Beaton will talk about his book, "A Toddler's Picture in His Uncle's Helmet" at Tuesday's Nevada State Library and Archives Brown Bag Author Series.

Carson City emergency crews were called Sunday evening to a crash involving three vehicles near the intersection of South Carson and Highway 50 West, also known as Spooner Junction.

The crash was reported at around 9 p.m. At least one person suffered injuries. A medical helicopter was ordered and landed at the Park and Ride on Highway 50 West. The patient was flown to the trauma ward at Renown Medical Center in Reno. Nevada Highway Patrol also responded.

Traffic is being diverted around the crash. Motorists can expect delays. The cause is under investigation.

A two-month investigation by the Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team led to the arrest Saturday of a 61-year-old man on felony drug charges including trafficking, possession and sales of methamphetamine and fentanyl.

Jessie Thomas Archuleta was arrested in the 2600 block of East Nye Lane for an arrest warrant and subsequent search warrant of the property. He was charged with trafficking a controlled substance of more than 28 grams, possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, two counts possession of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the arrest report, Carson City Sheriff's Office SET officers and the Tri-County Gang Unit went to the residence at 10:10 p.m. to serve the arrest warrant.

SET had been engaged in the investigation of Archuleta, who was living in a detached garage of the residence, regarding the sales of methamphetamine and fentanyl.

Deputies went to the front door, knocked and heard Archuleta talking on the phone. The man opened the door and as soon as he saw it was the police, he slammed the door closed and attempted to flee, causing a minor laceration to a deputy's finger, according to the arrest report.

SET and Tri-County Gang Unit deputies forced their way into the garage apartment at gunpoint and ordered Archuleta to the ground, where he complied and was taken into custody.

While deputies were inside the apartment they looked up and saw a methamphetamine water pipe and digital scale on the shelf of a west wall. There also appeared to be a red lockbox. Based on recent information, he was actively engaged in drug sales, the report states.

Based on the information and what was observed, SET applied for a telephonic search warrant, which was approved at 10:55 p.m. It allowed for the authorized search of the detached apartment where Archuleta had been living, the report states.

SET and Gang Unit deputies executed the search warrant of the man's residence. Several items of drug paraphernalia were found including the water pipe, scale, and baggies located inside the residence. There was a pay and owe sheet booklet located on the bed, which recorded who Archuleta had sold drugs to as well as dollar amounts, the report states.

There was a leather case on the bed that contained 44 grams of methamphetamine along with a scale. Archuleta had approximately $500 cash on his person and approximately 3 grams of fentanyl, the report states.

All of these items were photographed, seized and booked into evidence. The presence of the pay and owe sheets, scales, baggies and large quantity of drugs led SET deputies to believe that Archuleta was selling drugs. His cash was seized. Total bail amount listed: $266,137.

University of Nevada Las Vegas is working with the Nevada Department of Education to learn more about what parents with young children need in Carson City!

We want to increase resources for young children such as access to early childhood care, education, health, and other resources in Carson City area. We know that each community wants and needs different things, and want to make sure to hear directly from your community. This group discussion will be an opportunity to learn about how Nevada can best serve you, your children, and your community.

The event is scheduled for Tuesday, June 11, 2019, at Creativity Corner Preschool and Nursery 2323 N Carson St, Carson City, NV 89706, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Hundreds of American Indian dancers, drummers, artists, craftsmen and cultural enthusiasts will converge on Carson City the weekend of June 14-16 for the annual Stewart Indian School Father’s Day Powwow.

Festivities at the former Stewart Indian School, located at 5500 Snyder Ave., Carson City, include daily grand entries, crafts and food vendors, and a fun run. The event is open to the public and admission is free.

Honored by the American Indian Tourism Conference as the 2017-18 Best Cultural Heritage Experience, the event includes competition dancing, drum circles and a host of auxiliary activities, including a Stewart Indian School reunion on Saturday that is open to all past students and faculty of the school that was in operation from 1890 to 1980.

The three-day powwow opens Friday with grand entry scheduled for 7 p.m. Grand entry is the grand procession of dancers into the powwow arena at the beginning of each session. Two sessions are scheduled on Saturday, from 1-5 p.m. and 7-11 p.m. and will wrap up on Sunday with festivities from noon-4 p.m.

Gridley Hilpert of Sun Valley will serve as the Powwow’s master of ceremonies and Art Martinez of Carson City is the arena director.

The third annual Color Fun Run is sponsored by the Washoe Tribe. The cost to participate is $20 for individuals; $10 for youths or $80 for teams of 5. The race will start and finish at the Stewart gym and will be run around the school’s campus. Registration is at 7 a.m. and the run starts at 8 a.m. For more information about the fun run call Filomena Smokey at 775-883-7794.

Each June, the Carson City Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors recognizes quality of life, community and economic growth achievements.

At the Chamber annual meeting on June 13, Chamber Chairman of the Board Robert Fredlund will honor seven individuals or businesses that personify what Mayor Robert Crowell is so often proud to state, “Carson City is a great place to live, work, and play.”

Chamber Chairman of the Board Bob Fredlund adds, “People, events, and businesses all come together to create a Carson City continuing to attract the attention of potential new businesses and new residents, and it is our pleasure to annually acknowledge those who contribute so much to our City.”

The 2019 honorees are:

Dream Big Award: Southwest Gas and Arizona Pipeline
Southwest Gas and Arizona Pipeline have proven that giving back to the community is more than just giving checks to charities, it’s about motivating their employees to give of their time and getting them excited over a project that is a winner for the entire community including the two companies. When the Chamber’s Leadership Institute Class of 2019 decided to create a bee habitat as their class project, class member Stephen Jones, Manager of District Operations, brought the idea back to the employee-volunteer team called Blue — Building Lives Up Everywhere – who jumped at the chance to create a five-star bee habitat from inception to completion.

The team not only designed and built the structure, they graded and made major improvements to the site courtesy of Arizona Pipeline. From a small idea to a major accomplishment, it is anticipated about $40,000 in volunteer time and materials was invested in creating a bee habitat for all Carsonites to enjoy. The Blue team took to heart the anonymous quote, “Think big, dream big, believe big, and the results will be big.”

Economic Development Award: Miles Construction, Inc.
Miles Construction is a leader in building and remodeling commercial structures of all types and is committed to building quality structures in Carson City. As a general contractor, the company constructed the long-awaited multi-use athletic center (MAC), remodeled the Boys/Girls Club entry and constructed the teen center, remodeled a number of CCSD schools, constructed state government buildings and more.

They are partners in bringing back to life a historic eyesore in the downtown that was once the infamous Jack’s Bar. Bill Miles is the CEO and President of Miles Construction, Inc. and a long-time Carson City resident, graduating from Carson High in 1972.

Miles Construction embodies the quote by Sir Winston Churchill, “We shape our buildings: Thereafter, they shape us.”

Community Spirit Award: Linda Marrone
People define a community and there is no one who has been — and continues to be — more involved in Carson City than Linda Marrone. A long-time resident, former restaurateur, Nevada Appeal food columnist, and downtown business advocate, Marrone has managed the Carson City Farmer’s Market for the past 11 years. She cheerily volunteers for many good causes and is a baker extraordinaire.

She was instrumental in assisting the Chamber staff in coordinating the very successful gala to reopen the Bob Boldrick Theatre. Coretta Scott King is quoted as saying, “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” That’s Linda Marrone.

Best Annual Event – V&T Railway Polar Express
Now in its ninth year, the beloved children’s Christmas tale, “Polar Express,” has come to life each holiday season thanks to the dedicated staff of the V&T Railway. Since 2010 hundreds of families have shared in the delight of stopping at the North Pole and enjoying a few moments with Santa as he escorts the train to his station. This event has become a tradition that brings visitors from all over the region to enjoy a magical ride that will result in lifetime memories.

Author Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote, “We are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmastime.” The Polar Express allows us all to become a child again and see Christmas through the eyes of our children.

Non-Profit of the Year: ESL In Home Northern Nevada
Many immigrants come to our region not knowing the language and those willing to learn have found a friend in Florence Phillips, founder of ESL In Home Northern Nevada, who has assembled a team of volunteers to teach English to those struggling to learn their new language. Started in 2004, volunteer tutors have taught over 6,000 to become more self-reliant and to embrace their new home. Florence was named a CNN Hero this year. Florence and all her amazing volunteers embody the spirit of Nelson Mandela who declared, “We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in our hands to make a difference.” Florence Phillips continues to make a difference.

Volunteer of the Year – Linda Ritter
Each October, Linda Ritter spends the entire first day of the Chamber’s 9-month Leadership Institute setting the tone for the entire Leadership experience. At the end of this kick-off, the class is better prepared to enjoy the forthcoming experience and work together. Linda has earned the respect of each Leadership class and has made a big difference. John F. Kennedy must have had Linda in mind when he cited, “One person can make a difference, and everyone should try.”

Government Employee of the Year – Dan Stucky – City Engineer
The job of the Carson City Engineer is a big one and one that can try the patience of even the most patient person, for everything that is done is done in the public eye. Dan shepherded the redevelopment of Curry Street and is now undertaking the huge task of creating a friendlier and more appealing South Carson Street. He oversees all Capital Projects and maintenance. James Kip Finch, an American engineer and educator stated, “The engineer has been, and is, a maker of history.” Dan Stuckey is part of the history making of Carson City.

A 31-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday in the 2700 block of Sherman Lane for suspicion of possession of methamphetamine, a felony, and five misdemeanor offenses.

Jesse Sillis was taken into custody at 4:31 p.m. He also faces misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, driving on a suspended license, speeding 16-20 mph, no insurance and failure to stop at a stop sign.

According to the arrest report, a Carson City Sheriff's Office sergeant, assigned as Special Enforcement Team supervisor, made a traffic stop on a vehicle after observing that it failed to stop at a posted stop sign, going 10 mph through the sign.

The vehicle then accelerated, going 40 mph in a posted 25 mph and then 50-plus mph on Dori Way. The sergeant activated his lights and then emergency siren. The vehicle continued to pull away, then slowed down but didn't stop until turning north from Sherman.

The officer made contact with the driver and a juvenile in the vehicle. Sillis was aggressive and agitated with the officer, who advised the reason of the stop. The juvenile inside the car was allowed to exit the vehicle to go with his family, which had started to gather outside, the report states.

The suspect was asked to step outside the vehicle as a drug detection canine did an exterior sniff of the vehicle. The dog alerted positive. Dispatch advised the man's license had been suspended.

Deputies conducted a search and recovered a tooter straw, which is used to inhale drugs, on the driver's side. Residue inside the straw tested positive for meth. He was arrested.

At jail, without prompting, the man told the officer that he had seen him turn around and knew he was a sheriff's officer. Total bail amount listed: $5,255.

In other arrests:
— A 36-year-old Carson City man, Fernando Luna, was arrested Saturday, 9:31 p.m. in the area of I-580 and College Parkway for suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to maintain a lane of traffic and failure to stop at a stop sign.

Also arrested was Richard Ruiz, 33, for suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor open container.

According to the arrest report, a Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team deputy made a traffic stop on a vehicle that failed to come to a complete stop and rolled through a stop sign approaching Lompa Lane. The vehicle continued, went northbound to Interstate 580 where the deputy observed the right side tires cross the fog line on the right one time and then the left side, one time.

The deputy spoke with the driver, Luna, and passenger, Ruiz. The deputy could smell an odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. A sergeant arrived to assist and noticed Ruiz had an open can of beer on the passenger seat floor.

A drug detection canine, Ivo, conducted a free air sniff around the vehicle and alerted positive to the presence of drugs at the driver's door. Luna had been asked if there were any drugs in the vehicle. He replied no. During the investigation, officers located a glass meth pipe with a trace amount of methamphetamine inside.

Luna admitted to possession of the meth pipe and stated he had previously used it to smoke meth around 5 hours prior to the stop. A baggie of methamphetamine was recovered from the sock of Ruiz. He also admitted to swallowing methamphetamine prior to the stop and was later taken to the hospital. Bail for Luna: $3,866. Bail for Ruiz: $2,687.

— A 21-year-old Carson City man was arrested late Sunday in the area of Kit Sierra Loop for misdemeanor violation of bail conditions. According to the arrest report, the man was under probation with a clause not to have contact with his mother. Bail: $3,000.

— A 38-year-old transient was arrested Sunday, 10:58 a.m. in the area of East William and Plaza streets for misdemeanor violation of probation and being an ex-felon failing to register. Bail: $3,000.

— A 71-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Saturday, 5:23 p.m. in the 200 block of East Winnie Lane for misdemeanor suspicion DUI.

According to the arrest report deputies were called to the area regarding an accident where the driver struck a pole. Deputies made contact with the driver, who had glossy eyes and a slight odor of alcohol coming from her person. The woman advised she had a glass of wine.

The woman agreed to participate in field sobriety tests and showed impairment on some of the tests. She provided a preliminary breath test of .118 and was arrested for suspicion of DUI. Bail: $1,137.

— A 44-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Monday, 3:22 a.m. in the area of Telegraph and Valley streets for a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant, driving on a suspended license, driving without insurance and expired registration.

According to the arrest report, a Carson City sheriff's deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for having an expired license plate. The deputy made contact with the driver and learned the man had an active warrant for his arrest. The man said the warrant stemmed from driving without a valid driver's license. He was unable to provide current proof of insurance. Total bail amount listed: $2,186.

Warrants
— A 55-year-old transient was arrested Saturday, 1:04 p.m. in the 2300 block of North Carson Street for misdemeanor failure to appear warrants in Carson City and Douglas County. Bail: $1,695.

— A 35-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 1:01 a.m. in the 400 block of North Carson Street for two misdemeanor failure to appear warrants issued June 5, 2019 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $8,000.

— A 22-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday, 2:01 p.m. in the 4900 block of Highway 50 East for a misdemeanor warrant violation of Alternative Sentencing conditions. The warrant was issued June 4, 2019 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $3,000.

— A 39-year-old Minden man, Trevor Tomlinson, was served a felony bench warrant at the Carson City jail for failure to appear after posting bail on a drug charge. He was held without bail in lieu of a hearing.

— A 30-year-old female transient was arrested Saturday, 5:28 p.m. in the 3400 block of Highway 50 East for a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant issued Feb. 13, 2019 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $207.

In other arrests, Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team arrested a man Saturday for suspicion of drug trafficking, discovering fentanyl, and 44 grams of methamphetamine. Go here for the full story.
