Carson City Bee Hotel now open for business thanks to Chamber students

At the ribbon cutting ceremony held on Friday, quite a number of bees were seen buzzing around the new bee hotel soon to choose their future accommodation.

Released behind the Carson Tahoe Health Cancer Center at the trailhead of the one-mile long Serenity Trail on Thursday, 150 Mason bees couldn’t wait to be freed from their boxes by their foster mother, Debra Conrad, a member of the class who kept the bees until they could be released.

City officials were on hand to cut the ribbon and congratulate the Carson City Chamber Leadership Class of 2019 on the successful completion of their class project. Mayor Robert Crowell told the over 125 in attendance, “One-third of everything we eat is because of bee pollinators.” He further cited how proud he was that Carson City had been selected by the Xerces Society as the 76th Bee City USA this year.

The application to become a Bee City USA was submitted by the Great Basin Beekeepers of Nevada and Carson City Park, Recreation & Open Space with the pledge to provide healthy habitats for pollinators and to teach the community the importance of sustaining pollinators. Great Basin Beekeepers must report annually to the Xerces Society of their efforts to celebrate pollinators to be allowed to keep the designation as a Bee City USA.

Because of the Bee City USA designation, the Leadership class agreed to undertake the building of a bee habitat as their class project. They raised over $7,000, enlisted support from outside vendors, and oversaw the project from completion to the ribbon cutting ceremony. Class member Stephen Jones, Manager, District Operations for Southwest Gas was a part of the class and brought the concept back to Southwest Gas and their affiliate Arizona Pipeline Blue team to consider building a bee habitat as a volunteer project that fell within their stated scope “of enriching the quality of life of those around us.” It is estimated the volunteers of the Blue team donated about $40,000 in labor and materials for not only the actual structure, but for the improvement of the entire site.

There is much local public interest in bee preservation as seen by the number of hits received when the Chamber posted “bee updates” on their Facebook page. Some posts received more than 11,000 hits.

The new bee hotel is set up to be a teaching moment to those who pause to watch the bee activity. On the backside of the structure, a poster of the importance of pollinators was installed. On each of the sides are dedication plaques honoring those who made cash donations and those who participated in the Leadership Class of 2019.

It is the hope of the Class of 2019 that Carsonites acknowledge and learn of the importance of our friendly pollinators and limit the use of pesticides to provide a welcoming habitat to allow bees to do what they do best - pollinate for our future. They further encourage all to hike or bike the beautiful and shady Serenity Trail and to visit the Bee Hotel.

Carson City Leadership Institute is a legacy program of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce now in its 30th year. The nine-month program invites current and future leaders to better understand the community in which they live and work to be instrumental in leading Carson City into the future. The Class of 2019 will graduate on Thursday, June 13th. Applications for the Class of 2020 will begin in July.

Deputies noted they did not see any visible marks on his face or body.

Deputies went and spoke to the girlfriend. When they approached the open door, they saw that the woman only had on a tan skirt, and deputies told her to put on a shirt. She disappeared from view, and deputies feared she would get a weapon so they followed her inside.

Deputies asked her what had transpired that evening, and she begin telling deputies “some sort of story that did not make sense,” according to deputies. During their discussion, deputies asked her several times to cover her top half, and she refused.

Deputies asked her if she had a blue notebook, and she said she had a blue book that she “smacked (the boyfriend) upside the head” with. She then became extremely unintelligible with the remainder of her story, but she did admit to hitting the man with the book.

Deputies grabbed her wrists and pulled a shirt over her head to cover her before placing her in handcuffs. She became verbally uncooperative and began to pull away from deputies before falling to the floor. Deputies then physically carried her to the patrol unit and placed her in the backseat.

She was transported to the jail without further incident.

Free Music show: two solo sets by Brother Dan Palmer & Kazoo Studios

A musical treat arrives at A To Zen in Carson City on Monday, June 10 with two solo sets of exceptional musicians: Brother Dan Palmer of Carson City and Kazoo Studios of Oakland, Calif.

Dan Palmer is best classified as an upbeat, observant singing songwriter specializing in Modern Americana music. Often compared to artists as diverse as John Mayer, Maroon 5, James Taylor, David Wilcox, Dan Fogelberg, Todd Snider, Dave Mason, and Harry Chapin.

Brother Dan's main focus now is his original music, and he draws from his extensive experience to craft well-written songs that have universal appeal.

His obvious love of various styles of music translates into hybrid combinations which are interesting and unique, and yet comfortingly familiar, which serve as an excellent vehicle for his at times intense and highly personal lyrics.

A to Zen is located at 1803 N Carson St in Carson City. The show is from 5 to 7 p.m.

See the website www.brotherdanpalmer.com.

Kazoo Studios is the leading artist of the band Mother & The Boards, a fierce blend of folk, funk and experimental rock with undertones of blues.

Kazoo Studios will play a solo set. Kazoo's vocal prowess is paramount to her original songs, carrying messages of action, collective power, and community engagement. Studios was born in the suburbs of New York City, growing up in the 80's with strong influences of the hip hop culture. Her music is unique and provocative reflecting a wide array of subjects and styles. See the website here www.motherandtheboards.com and go here to listen: https://soundcloud.com/motherandtheboards/

Diego Elizondo returned to the boxing ring in the same fashion as he left it a year ago, with a draw Saturday at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. Meanwhile, Reno’s J.J. Mariano won his pro debut by a fourth round technical knockout.

Elizondo, a 20-year-old lightweight from Carson City, started strongly but Sacramento’s Sergio Vega rallied with powerful left hooks to pull out a four-round draw. All three judges scored it 38-38. Elizondo’s pro record is now 2-0-2. Vega is 2-0-1.

“I set the pace in the first round and I believe I did enough to win the fight,” Elizondo said. “The first two rounds, I felt like I dominated. In the third round, I landed some good punches — I didn’t completely slow down.

Senator Square: Creative and colorful, the Carson High School class of 2019 says goodbye

$

The Carson High School class of 2019 said their goodbyes to teachers June 5, most of the teachers finished their grades the same day and checked out June 7, and a few remaining teachers volunteered to help with graduation Saturday.

To the teachers, Administrative Office Specialist Lavon Sollberger warned them by saying, “Don't get stuck at school because you have not posted your grades; have them posted by 2 p.m.” Sollberger sent a photo of one of the rubber ducks from the faculty and staff after school lunch competition and added, “The duck pictured above was not injured although he was in the lead by quite a bit; he decided that due to a false start he would voluntarily take himself out of the competition.”

The past week at CHS has been one filled with taking final exams, signing yearbooks, and talking about the future; however, no one should forget about the senior pranks, a common tradition throughout high schools around the country, CHS being no exception to the rule.

This year, CHS seniors definitely kept the tradition going as could be seen by the helium filled balloons popping and their glitter covering the white tiled floors throughout Senator Square. Security actually had to pay a visit to CHS in the middle of the night June 3 because the balloons popping set off school alarms. The next Class of 2019 senior prank presented itself in the form of bras and underwear placed on trees and the building’s front entrances.

Empty threats were made, and several students were subsequently asked to help remove the undergarments with no tension and a great deal of laughing. Another prank involved water-filled-balloons being rolled onto the floors at various locations around the school, and, last but not least, the colored chalk decorating of student and staff parking spots in the middle of the night June 4.

Let it be known, no damage was done to either the building or personal property. Traditions never fade here at Carson High School, so happy graduation to the CHS Class of 2019, and happy Safe Grad to all heading off to Great America, both to the amusement park and into the future of the country.

Go here for graduation day photos and a list of CHS Class of 2019 graduates.

Wells: “We all have our time machines…those that take us back are memories...and those that carry us forward are dreams.”

Students said about the ride, “The ride is very fun, but it is scary on the drop because it takes your breath away.” Another went on to say, “The scariest parts are when you are freefalling and when you feel the tension.” Bean is also a telescope operator and volunteer staff member at the Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK
Parsa Hadjighasemi is the final Student of the Week for the 2018 – 2019 school year. Parsa, stands out above the rest, simply because he is the tallest freshman at CHS. Not only is he tall, he is an amazing athlete and plays on the CHS Varsity Basketball team while maintaining a Grade Point Average of 4.0. CHS Spanish teacher JP Albert nominated Parsa as the Student of the Week and said about him, “Parsa demonstrates leadership in class, is very well-behaved, and is both a model student and citizen.” Congratulations to Parsa Hadjighasemi for ‘standing above’ the rest and being noticed and honored by his teachers; CHS stands out above the rest due to students like Parsa.

JoAnne Skelly column: I Love Plant Gifting

$
0
0

I’ve been noticing all the new seedlings coming up around the yard: Currants, Oregon grape, penstemons, sumacs, catmint, caryopteris, feverfew, hardy geranium and many more. I did not plant these; the birds did. The seeds spread in the wind or I accidentally spread seeds when deadheading.

My friend Peg moved last year and has been thinning out plants in her yard. She gave me pink hyacinths last fall that put on a beautiful spring display. She dug up columbines and sent some my way and they bloomed too. Yesterday she shared agastaches and cleomes that her friend started from seeds.

We have been in this house for over 30 years and when we moved in, the yard was simply trees in a line and lots of lawn. No flowers, no shrubs. I was working with the Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners then and they began to share plants with me.

TJ gave me lilac starts, which are now 10 feet tall. Catherine couldn’t wait to get rid of rhubarb and horseradish. Vi had juniper trees seedlings to share. Lois gave me beautiful yellow bearded irises. When no one wanted the tiny office Christmas tree, a dwarf Alberta spruce, I took it home and planted it. It is now over six feet tall and affectionately known as "Conehead." I planted a stick of a willow tree that soars above the nearby ash trees.

I haven’t grown agastaches or cleomes before. According to Sunset Western Garden book agastaches, which can reach over two feet in height, are “dependable, summer-blooming perennials with fragrant foliage …(that) make colorful additions to herb gardens and flower borders.” Cleomes grow four to six feet tall with open clusters of pink or white flowers.

Through the years I have moved seedlings of currants and others I mentioned around the yard adding to the depth of the landscape. It’s a good time of year to dig up and move your "gifts" around or plant swaps from friends. They are small initially, but with water and fertilizer plants grow to almost full size within a year or two. I have found that plants that volunteer do much better than things I buy.

They seem to have some established affinity with the site, raring to go, joining all their existing ‘friends’. Often gift plants from others do well too, possibly because I get them when they are tiny.

Transplant plants from your own yard or swap gifts with others. Let the planting begin!

Deputies asked the man to step out of the vehicle. The man needed to use the car for balance as he was unsteady on his feet, the report states. Deputies noticed a strong odor of alcohol emitting form his breath, and his speech was slurred as he spoke.

Dispatch advised that name was clear of all warrants, but that a man with a different first name matching his description had a warrant. Dispatch advised the man on the warrant had a tattoo on his chest of a name. Deputies asked to see the man's chest, on which was the tattoo dispatch had described.

The warrant was issued out of Carson City Justice Court on March 28.

Deputies arrested the man on the warrant as well as for obstructing a public officer for giving a false name. Bail: $3,412; $3,000 cash only.

Each June, the Carson City Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors recognizes quality of life, community and economic growth achievements.

At the Chamber annual meeting on June 13, Chamber Chairman of the Board Robert Fredlund will honor seven individuals or businesses that personify what Mayor Robert Crowell is so often proud to state, “Carson City is a great place to live, work, and play.”

Chamber Chairman of the Board Bob Fredlund adds, “People, events, and businesses all come together to create a Carson City continuing to attract the attention of potential new businesses and new residents, and it is our pleasure to annually acknowledge those who contribute so much to our City.”

The 2019 honorees are:

Dream Big Award: Southwest Gas and Arizona Pipeline
Southwest Gas and Arizona Pipeline have proven that giving back to the community is more than just giving checks to charities, it’s about motivating their employees to give of their time and getting them excited over a project that is a winner for the entire community including the two companies. When the Chamber’s Leadership Institute Class of 2019 decided to create a bee habitat as their class project, class member Stephen Jones, Manager of District Operations, brought the idea back to the employee-volunteer team called Blue — Building Lives Up Everywhere – who jumped at the chance to create a five-star bee habitat from inception to completion.

The team not only designed and built the structure, they graded and made major improvements to the site courtesy of Arizona Pipeline. From a small idea to a major accomplishment, it is anticipated about $40,000 in volunteer time and materials was invested in creating a bee habitat for all Carsonites to enjoy. The Blue team took to heart the anonymous quote, “Think big, dream big, believe big, and the results will be big.”

Economic Development Award: Miles Construction, Inc.
Miles Construction is a leader in building and remodeling commercial structures of all types and is committed to building quality structures in Carson City. As a general contractor, the company constructed the long-awaited multi-use athletic center (MAC), remodeled the Boys/Girls Club entry and constructed the teen center, remodeled a number of CCSD schools, constructed state government buildings and more.

They are partners in bringing back to life a historic eyesore in the downtown that was once the infamous Jack’s Bar. Bill Miles is the CEO and President of Miles Construction, Inc. and a long-time Carson City resident, graduating from Carson High in 1972.

Miles Construction embodies the quote by Sir Winston Churchill, “We shape our buildings: Thereafter, they shape us.”

Community Spirit Award: Linda Marrone
People define a community and there is no one who has been — and continues to be — more involved in Carson City than Linda Marrone. A long-time resident, former restaurateur, Nevada Appeal food columnist, and downtown business advocate, Marrone has managed the Carson City Farmer’s Market for the past 11 years. She cheerily volunteers for many good causes and is a baker extraordinaire.

She was instrumental in assisting the Chamber staff in coordinating the very successful gala to reopen the Bob Boldrick Theatre. Coretta Scott King is quoted as saying, “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” That’s Linda Marrone.

Best Annual Event – V&T Railway Polar Express
Now in its ninth year, the beloved children’s Christmas tale, “Polar Express,” has come to life each holiday season thanks to the dedicated staff of the V&T Railway. Since 2010 hundreds of families have shared in the delight of stopping at the North Pole and enjoying a few moments with Santa as he escorts the train to his station. This event has become a tradition that brings visitors from all over the region to enjoy a magical ride that will result in lifetime memories.

Author Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote, “We are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmastime.” The Polar Express allows us all to become a child again and see Christmas through the eyes of our children.

Non-Profit of the Year: ESL In Home Northern Nevada
Many immigrants come to our region not knowing the language and those willing to learn have found a friend in Florence Phillips, founder of ESL In Home Northern Nevada, who has assembled a team of volunteers to teach English to those struggling to learn their new language. Started in 2004, volunteer tutors have taught over 6,000 to become more self-reliant and to embrace their new home. Florence was named a CNN Hero this year. Florence and all her amazing volunteers embody the spirit of Nelson Mandela who declared, “We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in our hands to make a difference.” Florence Phillips continues to make a difference.

Volunteer of the Year – Linda Ritter
Each October, Linda Ritter spends the entire first day of the Chamber’s 9-month Leadership Institute setting the tone for the entire Leadership experience. At the end of this kick-off, the class is better prepared to enjoy the forthcoming experience and work together. Linda has earned the respect of each Leadership class and has made a big difference. John F. Kennedy must have had Linda in mind when he cited, “One person can make a difference, and everyone should try.”

Government Employee of the Year – Dan Stucky – City Engineer
The job of the Carson City Engineer is a big one and one that can try the patience of even the most patient person, for everything that is done is done in the public eye. Dan shepherded the redevelopment of Curry Street and is now undertaking the huge task of creating a friendlier and more appealing South Carson Street. He oversees all Capital Projects and maintenance. James Kip Finch, an American engineer and educator stated, “The engineer has been, and is, a maker of history.” Dan Stuckey is part of the history making of Carson City.
