Monday's Democratic luncheon will feature a presentation by the business development team of Ormat Technologies, owner-operator of the Steamboat geothermal complex south of Reno. Ormat designs and builds geothermal and recovered energy generating equipment for power generators in 30 countries around the world. In Africa, Central America and the United States, they supply energy from their own plants to utilities that distribute electricity directly to consumers.

A 34-year-old Carson City woman was arrested by Special Enforcement Team deputies in the 400 block of Corbett Street Wednesday afternoon for suspicion of possession of drugs and parole and probation violation.

According to the report, Mary-Rachael Nicole Reasoner was arrested by SET deputies after they were asked to assist parole and probation officers.

Officers were searching Reasoner’s residence as a condition of her parole and probation when they located a small black zip up baggy in her bedroom, containing a methamphetamine pipe and a bag with trace amounts of the drug.

In the trash can beside the bedroom door, they also located a crumbled up piece of tin foil with burnt heroin residue. In between the mattress and the box spring of her room, they found another piece of tin foil with burnt heroin residue, a tooter straw, and a small lighter. In a bookshelf they found a vial with trace amounts of methamphetamine inside.

She was placed under arrest for possession of methamphetamine, possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia, and violating her parole and probation conditions.

No bail.

— A 29-year-old Carson City woman was arrested in the area of Silver Sage and Clearview on a contempt of court warrant out of Sparks Municipal Court.

The warrant was issued March 14.

Bail: $840 cash only.

— A 39-year-old Carson City man was transported from Douglas County to the Carson City Jail on Wednesday on a contempt of court warrant.

The warrant was issued March 13.

Bail: $500 cash only

Over the course of a year, millions of people become homeless with numbers rising. Unfortunately, for those with pets it becomes more difficult, forcing them to choose between their pet and a roof over their head. Surprisingly, most choose to stay on the streets with their pets for longer periods of time. Their pets are their comfort, provide an emotional bond of loyalty, provide protection and are nonjudgmental. It is estimated that one in four homeless and disadvantaged people have a pet. Pets of the homeless do not choose their guardians. A difference can be made to aid these pets.

More than 20,416 pets have been medically treated through the assistance of Feeding Pets of the Homeless, and over 644 tons of pet food collected and distributed. There are more than 409 Donation Sites nationwide. Pets of the Homeless has provided over $1.23million in emergency veterinary care to pets of the homeless.

Carson City University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in partnership with Carson City Parks and Recreation and Friends of Silver Saddle Ranch, is offering two weekly sessions at Silver Saddle Ranch, 2648 Carson City Road in Carson City, for youth who are not able to keep or raise a small farm animal to experience working with either rabbits or goats. Area 4-H leaders will bring their animals for attendees, 9 – 14 years of age, to work with in these hands on day camps.

Attendees will learn what it takes to select and raise a rabbit or goat – handling, health and nutrition, showing, housing and how to have fun. A fee of $50 per attendee, per camp, includes water, snacks and basic educational materials.

Week One: Let’s Learn About Rabbits – June 18 – 21, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Week Two: Funny and Fabulous Goats – June 25 – 28, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra’s (UWNNS) wants to hear from the communities we serve. UWNNS's Listening Tour will ask and listen to community members throughout different northern Nevada counties. Information collected will be used to inform and guide future work. The two ways to participate are through an online survey and a series of community conversations.

Community Conversations will invite community members, leaders, non-profit partners, and activists to join us in gathering a collective perspective of our community. Anyone can attend. During the one-hour long session, we will ask participants to share what they believe are the most pressing, or significant, issues facing their community. Attendance is FREE, but please RSVP to help us prepare for your participation.

If you are not able to attend a Community Conversation, we have an online survey available at www.uwnns.org/survey for anyone in northern Nevada to take that also asks what you consider to be the top community issues and for feedback about our current focus on early childhood literacy. The survey is confidential, does not ask for names, and takes about 5 minutes to complete.

Carson City, NV (June, 2019)- The 2019 Nevada State Fair will be held June 6th – 9th, open daily 11am-10pm, and free to the public! This year we are proud to introduce our new Home & Garden Show inside the pavilion.

Nevada State Fair returns to Mills Park in Carson City, Nevada’s great capital for four days of fun, live entertainment on the main stage, carnival rides, culture, music and much more!

The Nevada State Fair was founded in 1874 and had been Nevada’s longest running event. The Board of Directors for the Nevada State Fair met on Tuesday, March 8th, 2011 and decided to close, ending a 136 year run (1874-2010).

In August of 2013 a new Nevada state non-profit company was formed to continue the legacy. With collaborative efforts from both state and private sectors, the Nevada State Fair is welcomed back and is pleased to be held in Carson City annually.

Wheeled Food Wednesday is back! The BAC will be hosting food trucks every Wednesday this summer, starting June 19th and going until September 19th! The trucks will start serving at 5:30pm and go until 8:00pm. There will be a wide variety of food trucks, so everyone will be able to find something they love. There will be kid’s activities—including a bounce house—and performances from different musicians throughout the year.

After passing unanimously in the Assembly and Senate, Senate Bill 140 (SB 140), which sets aside 10 percent of uncommitted groundwater as a reserve, was signed into law yesterday by Gov. Steve Sisolak. The Nature Conservancy in Nevada is focused on protecting water for the environment and applauds the legislature and Governor for taking this innovative step toward conserving water for communities, for the environment, and for the future.

The bill, informally referred to as a “reserve water” bill, requires the State Engineer to reserve 10 percent of the total remaining uncommitted groundwater in hydrographic (administrative groundwater unit) basins that are not fully appropriated from being appropriated for any use. Nevada is the driest state in the nation, and many of the state’s 256 basins are over-appropriated beyond their perennial yield (the amount of groundwater that can be consumed each year without depleting the groundwater aquifer).

“Because the reserve water will not be appropriated, it will allow for a ‘rainy day fund’ for basins in times of water scarcity and drought,” said Laurel Saito Ph.D., TNC’s Nevada Water Program Director. “This buffer within the amount of groundwater available for use will help protect both water rights holders and the state’s many natural ecosystems that depend on groundwater.”

SB 140 has important implications for Nevada water law, and can also serve as a model for how other western states can defend both water rights holders and the environment. According to Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President of the Nevada Farm Bureau Federation, “This bill is a good idea for Nevada because it recognizes existing water law and prior appropriation and reserves water in basins not already fully appropriated.”

“Water is a public resource, and ultimately a resource that needs to be preserved for future generations of people and nature,” said Rick Felling, retired Deputy Administrator of the Nevada Division of Water Resources. “Not fully developing the resource gives some room to maneuver, ensures the integrity of the water rights system, and protects water rights holders and the environment.”

Overnight road closures will take place on State Route 28 south of Incline Village June 17 and 18 as the Nevada Department of Transportation places final roadway striping as part of installation of the State Route 28 shared used path.

Both directions of SR 28 will be closed between Lakeshore Boulevard in southern Incline Village and the U.S. 50 junction from 8 p.m.-6:30 a.m. nightly June 17 and 18 as final roadway striping is placed on the highway.

The closures are scheduled for overnight hours to reduce impact on heavy daytime traffic. The closures are subject to change. One potential alternate route for north to south traffic is Mt. Rose Highway connecting Incline Village to southern Reno and taking Interstate 580 to U.S. 50 to Lake Tahoe.

Through late June, daytime single lane closures will also take place Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m.-6:30 p.m. in areas between the southern end of Incline Village and three miles south of Sand Harbor State Park. Periodic overnight and weekend single lane closures may also occur. Motorists should anticipate 20 to 30-minute travel delays.

The roadway striping is one of the finishing touches on a multi-year project to build a three-plus mile shared-use path from the southern end of Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park. With more than 70 percent of the pollutants impacting Lake Tahoe’s clarity coming from the built environment, water quality improvements such as enhanced roadside drainage inlets, sediment filtration systems and erosion control were also installed to help preserve the quality of stormwater entering Lake Tahoe. The project also includes additional roadway emergency pull-outs, transit upgrades and three new paid parking areas near the Ponderosa Ranch and Tunnel Creek Café to provide safer parking options.

The pathway remains closed, and recreationists are reminded that they can be fined for traveling on the trail before it is officially opened.

When open by early July, the new pathway by contractor Granite Construction will enhance safety and mobility for everyone on the roadway. More than 2.5 million vehicles a year travel on SR 28, mixing with as many as 2,000 pedestrians and bicyclists who park and recreate near the roadside on peak days, creating safety and accessibility concerns on the mountain highway.

— Nevada State Fair at Mills Park (all day). 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The Nevada State Fair returns to Carson City, Nevada’s great capital! Four days of fun, entertainment, carnival rides, culture, music and so much more! The Nevada State Fair is proud to celebrate our great State of Nevada. This year, we’re proud to feature Nevada State Fair – Home & Garden Show held in the Pavilion at Mills Park: Friday June 7 through Sunday June 9. Park visitors will receive free day-use admission and free fishing (no license required) at all of Nevada’s State Parks. This statewide event encourages Nevadans to discover the many exciting and affordable recreation opportunities right in their own backyards. “Nevada’s state parks offer a great diversity of outdoor opportunities,” said State Parks Administrator Robert Mergell. “For example, visitors can explore the slot canyons of Cathedral Gorge, tour a genuine ghost town at Berlin-Ichthyosaur or spend a relaxing afternoon fishing at Wild Horse.”Discover Nevada State Parks Day is also an opportunity for visitors to take the passport challenge and add a stamp to their passport booklet, or if they don’t have one yet, to pick one up while visiting any state park. — Dutch Oven Class at Mormon Station State Park. 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 2295 Maine St. in Genoa, Nevada. Join the Northern Sierra Dutch Oven Group (NSDOG) for a Dutch oven class at the historic and scenic Mormon Station in Genoa. Class participants will learn the basics of Dutch oven cooking under the guidance of seasoned instructors. Cost is $10 per person and can be paid at the time of the class (cash only). — State Capitol Guided Tours at the Nevada State Capitol. Two separate tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday in Carson City. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. — Carson City Library's Sumer Learning Challenge will be out of this world. 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at 900 N. Roop St. in Carson City. This year’s Summer Learning Challenge at the Carson City Library is shaping up to be out of this world. The challenge is divided by age, with ages 0-5 years old completing a series of activities with a parent or caregiver. Ages 6-11 have a goal of reading at least 20 hours, ages 12-17 reading 30 hours and 18 and older reading 40 hours.

— Muscle Powered Weekly Bicycle Ride. 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Fremont Elementary School in Carson City. Typically, this ride consists of two 10-15 minute loops with varying pace depending on rider level. This is a “no drop” ride so no one will be left behind. The Carson City Symphony's 35th annual Pops Party concert will be held this Sunday, June 9, 2019 at the Capital Amphitheater, in the park between the Capitol and Legislature buildings.The Carson City Symphony, lead by David Bugli, will be joined on the program by singer-songwriter Tom Miller and the Carson City Symphony Chorus, led by interim director Ricky Hutton. The program begins at 6 p.m. and includes show tunes, marches, pops music, and two of Tom Miller's original songs arranged for orchestra by David Bugli. Admission is free.

On April 27th, there was a Fundraiser and Silent Auction to help raise money for my wife who is battling Stage IV cancer. There is no chemo or radiation involved because doctors said those treatments would do more harm than good. For this reason, my insurance pays nothing toward her treatment. We also have a $7,000 deductible.

The fundraiser turned out to be a great success and we wanted to thank the many businesses who donated gift cards or items to the Silent Auction.

First and foremost is Flat Earth Pizza. Not only did they allow us to hold the event there, but THEY approached me about donating a portion of their day's profits to us. Ryan, Brandon, Kayla, and staff were very helpful. Even now we have a raffle basket with other great prizes at their location. Awesome people!
