A 24-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday on a felony warrant charge and is considered a person of interest in the June 1 armed robbery of a woman who was followed to her home after leaving a casino and threatened with a gun, a Carson City sheriff’s lieutenant said.

Arrested Thursday morning at a Jumbo Way home was Jac Owen. He was taken into custody on the felony warrant charge unrelated to the armed robbery, said Carson City Sheriff's Office Lt. Brian Humphrey. A second person of interest has also been identified and remains at large. Three others inside the home were detained briefly.

In the robbery earlier this month, two men followed the victim from Casino Fandango to her Sonoma Street residence just after 3 a.m.

When the victim’s vehicle pulled into the driveway, one of the two suspects approached the woman, pointed a pistol at her, and demanded money or he would shoot her. The second man took the victim’s purse from the woman’s vehicle. The suspects then fled in a pickup. Scroll photos to see the pickup that was believed to be used during the robbery.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Caught in the Act, an Evening of One Acts this weekend at the Brewery Arts Center

An Evening of One Acts

Proscenium Players, Inc. brings a witty buffet of One Acts this weekend to the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall.
Proscenium Players, Inc., the second oldest continuously-operating theater company in Nevada will present a series of humorous One Act plays this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The themes of the Acts are as varied as: When you realize your love life is being orchestrated by a terrible screenwriter, how do you stop the ride and get off?

How does a hapless bystander respond when called upon by a deranged actress to give the brush off to her recent ex?

What if your smart car is literally smarter than you and insanely jealous of your girlfriend? And, when it's just the girls, what do the put-upon ladies of Shakespeare – Ophelia, Juliet, Desdemona, Kate, Anne Boleyn and Hecate – gripe about?

Hilariously written by New York playwright Bruce Kane and local writer Fred Hampton, this series of One Acts will flip the script and sort of answer these questions.

Of Bruce Kane, theater professor Duke Stroud says “Bruce is a gifted writer in all genre with a special gift for comedy. I've directed many of his plays and sketches with great audience approval”.

Performances are June 12 and 13 at 7pm and June 14 at 2pm in the Performance Hall at 511 West King Street in Carson City. Advance sale ticket prices are: $8 for Brewery Arts Center and Proscenium Players, Inc. members, $12 for seniors and students and $12.00 for general admission and $15 at the door.

Tickets are available for purchase at Breweryarts.org or in our Artisan Store at 449 West King Street, Carson City, NV 89703.

For more info call the Brewery Arts Center office at 775-883-1976.

Pancake breakfast Saturday kicks off Carson City Library summer reading program

Carson City Library’s Summer Reading Program will kick off with the Breakfast for Books at 8-10 a.m. Saturday.
“It’s important kids keep reading in the summer so they start off strong in the fall,” said Heather Butler, youth services librarian. “This bridges the gap at the end of the school year.”

This year’s program, Every Hero has a Story, will be hosted online, with participants signing up and tracking hours read at the carsoncitylibrary.com website. Each participant will be assigned an avatar. As that avatar progresses with minutes read and logged, prizes are unlocked for literary games, author videos and other rewards.

Those who complete the program will earn a free book or a 3-D printout. “They don’t have to hit that mark, but if they do, they get something for it,” Butler said.

In honor of the theme, Every Hero has a Story, the Carson City Fire Department will sponsor the pancake breakfast, which costs $3 per person.

While the reading program has focused on youth in the past, this year it will be open to adults as well. Age categories begin at ages 0-4 for listening; kindergarten-fifth grade kids; sixth-12th grade teens and 13 and above as adults.

“When parents are reading with their children, it gives them the opportunity to connect,” said Sena Loyd, library director. “It also provides a recreation experience for adults. Prizes for adults include tickets for the V&T train and to the Nevada State Museum.”

In following the theme, there will be events throughout the summer featuring firefighters, law-enforcement officials and members of the Nevada National Guard.

“They will come in and talk about what they do,” Butler said. “It’s for all ages. The kids will realize the importance and value of having these heroes in our community. For some of the teens, they may be interested in a career and can find out more about it.”

Participants can sign up online and begin logging reading hours Saturday. A calendar of events is also available online.

Rattlesnake Avoidance Training for Dogs in Dayton and Yerington

$
0
0

Rattlesnakes have already been active for months due to the mild winter and low precipitation, fostering an earlier and longer snake season. If you enjoy activities that take you and your dogs outdoors, you and your pets may be at risk for encountering rattlesnakes.

And as the snakes keep moving in search of food and mates, they may even end up in your own backyard. According to the Nevada Department of Wildlife, the state’s current drought means that more rattlers will find their way into urban areas proving for a very active snake season.

“I’d say that most dog owners don’t really think about snake bites until they see a rattlesnake for themselves, in parks, or their backyards, and then realize their dogs can be at risk,” says John Potash co-founder and co-owner of Get Rattled. He adds, “Get Rattled is a unique training clinic designed specifically to teach dogs on rattlesnake avoidance. We have been teaching this clinic for 15 years and have successfully trained thousands of dogs.”

Potash is licensed by the Nevada Department of Wildlife and has over 25 years of experience working with venomous snakes and wildlife in areas of animal control, wildlife rescue, and public education. He works with skilled dog trainer Willie J. Stevens Jr. who has over 20 years of experience training and judging pointing dogs.

Rattlesnake Avoidance Training is a crucial tool for dog owners. Potash says, “Prevention is your number one line of defense in protecting your dogs from venomous snakes. When dogs and their owners go hiking or to the dog parks to go off leash, this training teaches them to be fearful of the rattlesnake. It protects people as well, as the dog becomes an alert system. This training has proven to be an effective tool in teaching rattlesnake avoidance to all dogs from Great Danes to Chihuahuas.”

Because rattlesnakes can regulate the amount of venom they inject into another animal; the health risks to dogs from a bite can vary greatly depending on the amount of venom injected, the species and size of rattlesnake, and the size of the dog and where it was bitten. Dogs can also be bitten when owners are not around, so Potash suggests that people know some general signs of a bite along with health risks: “Dogs are usually bitten on their limbs, neck, head, or face so look for severe swelling in those areas. After some time, the venom may produce nausea, vomiting, and the dog can seem lethargic and will begin to act as if something is bothering them. If you see a snake bite happen or notice these symptoms, keep your dog calm and take them to a vet right away. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.”

Lyon County pet owners are highly encouraged to take part in this important Rattlesnake Avoidance Training Clinic. Get Rattled will be holding training sessions in Dayton at the Dayton Valley Dog Park on Saturday, June 20, 2015 with appointments between 8:00am and 11:00am, and at Mountain View Park in Yerington June 20 with appointments between 1:00pm and 4:00pm.

Pre-registration is encouraged but walk-ins are welcome. Sessions last approximately 20 minutes. Costs for the training are $75 per dog. The clinic does require the use of a remote training collar that will be customized to each individual dog. This clinic will provide local dog owners extra assurance and peace of mind this summer that their dogs will avoid dangerous rattlesnake encounters, protecting their health, and their families from suffering the pain and medical costs of a rattlesnake bite.

To register or for more information, please contact Get Rattled at 775-234-8844, GetRattledNV@gmail.com
