A man accused of deserting the military and sexually assaulting a minor was arrested Monday by a Nevada Highway Patrol sergeant.

David L. Helm was booked into the Washoe County jail awaiting the United States Air Force to take him back to Scott Air Force Base in St. Clair County near Belleville, Illinois for his court martial, said NHP Trooper Dave Gibson.

At around 9:45 p.m. Highway Patrol Sgt. Mike Edgel made a traffic stop on a black 2011 Yamaha motorcycle for not having an operating tail lamp. The traffic stop was made on Interstate 580 northbound near Neil Road.

As Sgt. Edgell approached the motorcycle and its two riders, he was alerted to a felony warrant on a United States Air Force military deserter registered to the Illinois license plate owned by David L. Helm. Upon contact with the driver of the motorcycle the adult male cooperated and identified himself with his Illinois driver’s license as David L. Helm. NHP Sgt. Edgell was able to place Helm into handcuffs without a fight.

The female adult rider accompanying Helm was identified by her Philippine passport. She was checked for any wants or warrants through the DPS dispatch center and she was checked clear. A taxi cab was called and she was able to leave the scene of the arrest.

David L. Helm was transported to the Washoe County Detention Center where he was booked on the felony warrant for military desertion. He is currently still at the Washoe County jail awaiting the United States Air Force to transport him back to Scott Air Force Base in St. Clair County near Belleville Illinois for his court martial.

The USAF first alerted the public to Helm’s disappearance on June 4th. He was scheduled to appear before a military court on Monday prior to his absconding. Helm is also accused of sexual assault on a female younger than 16 years old.

NHP's Sgt. Edgell is a 17-year veteran with the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Flash Flood Watch for much of Western Nevada and the Sierra for Wednesday. This includes, Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties as well as the Lake Tahoe Basin.

A plume of moisture from Tropical Storm Blanca will combine with a potent trough bringing the potential for widespread rain and localized flash flooding to the region, according to the weather service.

The watch runs from Wednesday morning to 11 p.m. Wednesday night. Go here for the announcement.

The tropical nature of the air mass and slow moving storms will lead to efficient rainfall production. A few thunderstorms may be possible as well increasing the flash flood potential in the afternoon and early evening.

The weather service advises areas prone to flooding and debris flows may be near burn scars from previous wildfires and steep terrain.

She has been responsible for developing quality programs that cater to a diverse group of vibrant seniors. Programs include educational lectures, fitness and wellness initiatives, resources for promoting a healthy, independent lifestyle, and special interest programs.

Wild West ways of the Web saddle with free Wi-Fi in Old West Nevada town of Virginia City

$

While virtually the entire town of Virginia City remains true to its 1850s heritage, today’s visitor is now able to connect with the past through the future with the integration of free Wi-Fi. The “VC Visitor” access provides free 24-hour access with a simple email login for visitors in the business district.

“The Virginia City Historic District ensures that the town remains the largest National Historic Landmark in the county. It’s something we are very proud of, and in fact, that’s a key communication point in our marketing and social media efforts. We’re not changing that, we’re enhancing it,” said Deny Dotson, tourism director for the Virginia City Tourism Commission. “Through the generosity of a locally-based internet provider, we’re able to offer our visitors a way to connect through their smart phones, tablets or laptops and our mobile app while visiting. As the place that helped establish Nevada, we’re also excited to be one the first towns to offer free Wi-Fi in and around our most popular attractions. While this is an added benefit to our visitors, for those that still want to ‘unplug’ they can easily do that too.”

Due to Virginia City’s remote location at 6,200 feet and 22 miles from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, online access is spotty. The free Wi-Fi allows visitors to remain connected. The service is made available through a locally-based internet provider.

With the free Wi-Fi, visitors can also download the “Virginia City, Nevada” mobile app that includes an audio tour of 32 historical landmarks, list of attractions, ability to purchase event tickets and connections to social media. It is available for iOS and Google Play devices.

For information on Virginia City, Nev., visit VisitVirginiaCityNV.com or call the Virginia City Tourism Commission (VCTC) at 775‐847‐7500.

A short 30-minute drive from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport takes visitors to one of the largest historic districts in the United States - Virginia City, Nev. Come experience this mining “boomtown” as it was in the 1800’s. Step back in time while visiting the numerous historic buildings, saloons, churches and museums or take a mine tour or even ride a real steam train.

The Comstock Adventure Passes offer the best value with discounted attraction packages. For lodging, event calendar or Comstock Adventure Passes, visit online or call 775-847-7500. The Visitor Information Center is located at 86 South C Street, Virginia City.
