Event Date:
Repeats every day until Sun Jul 22 2018 .
July 21, 2018 (All day)
July 22, 2018 (All day)

I have long found it impossible to decide which Carson City event is my favorite: forever waffling between Nevada Day and the Taste of Downtown. Seeing as the annual parade is still months away, I’m going to side with ‘The Taste’ purely for its timeliness. With over forty local eateries participating, multiple raffles at downtown shops, and seven bands rocking every corner of the event, it’s practically impossible to have a bad time. This might be the biggest happening in town, but it’s by no means the only good time: read on for all this weekend’s options.

CARSON CITY — The US Forest Service projects as many as 26 million trees will die this year from drought or beetles, and that estimate is down from 27 million in 2017 and a peak of more than 60 million in 2016. Average global temperatures are rising, and some models show as much as a 7 degree increase in average annual temperature in the Sierra Nevada mountains by the end of the century.

Reno Lumber expanding to Carson City

Reno Lumber, a wholesale lumber supplier in the Truckee Meadows, is expanding its retail operations to Carson City and changing its name to Reno Carson Lumber, said General Manager Chris Fleiner.

The company purchased 4.8 acres located at 3691 Arrowhead Drive in Carson City for a lumber yard, and broke ground on a new 2,000 square-foot retail facility in April 2018.

Completion of the new Reno Carson Lumber yard and store is anticipated at the end of August, Fleiner said, and should be open for business immediately afterward.

"We're very excited about being down there," he said. "We feel that's where the growth is going."

Fleiner said the spike in commerce at the Reno Tahoe Industrial Complex (TRIC) off USA Parkway in Storey County is fueling growth along the U.S. Highway 50 East corridor between Silver Springs and Dayton, Fleiner said, and the company has been increasing its business in that region of Northern Nevada.

"We'd been looking at Carson for quite some time," he said. "We've been doing more and more business down south over the past few years. We feel there's a big enough market there to get ourselves going."

Reno Carson Lumber sells all dimensions of lumber, including siding and paneling, to meet the needs of commercial home builders and home improvement weekend warriors alike, Fleiner said.

"Basically we sell anything to build a house," he said, "minus the hardware."

Fleiner said Reno Carson Lumber focuses on getting products at the best prices for its customers, due in large part to its connections with other businesses in its building construction network.

"We have our buying power and we have better buying opportunities, because we buy by volume and we offer free delivery," he said. "We've put ‌in a lot of investment and we're looking forward to it paying off for us."

A building permit valued at $750,000 has been purchased through the Carson City Building Division by Quick Quack Car Wash, a Roseville, CA-based service chain with 50 locations in five western states.

A new Carson City franchise, planned on about 3.4 acres at the corner of East College Parkway and Retail Court across from Del Taco and right off the Interstate 580 freeway, would be the company's first in Nevada.

Quick Quack Car Wash, founded in 2004 and renamed in 2008, built its business model on the values of being fast, clean, loved and everywhere, according to the corporate web site.

"Apart from a quick and entertaining car wash experience, Quick Quack is best known for unlimited car wash memberships, free vacuums and exceptional customer service from sharp looking, tie-clad team members," the web site stated. "Quick Quack takes pride in being regularly recognized as 'The Best' or 'The Favorite' car wash in every community where a Quick Quack can be found."

The company said it also prides itself on being a leader in environmentally-friendly and sustainable business practices.

"Cleanliness is one of our company values and we believe that this extends beyond just a clean car," the company web site stated.

Technology plays a large part in keeping with a clean business practice.

"We invest in high-tech equipment for speed and safety," the company stated. "Quick Quack Car Wash's state-of-the-art car wash equipment does the heavy lifting and the 'dirty work.'"

Most Quick Quack Car Wash locations are open seven days a week, year-round, except Christmas and Thanksgiving. Hours are typically 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the summer and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in winter.

Attempts to reach the company for comment on expected completion and opening dates have been unsuccessful thus far. Visit Quick Quack Car Wash online for more information about the company and its service.

MOS Talk: Office makes being in two places at once possible

$

I've often mused that I should be cloned so that I can be everywhere I need to be at the same time.

But nobody thus far has come knocking on my door offering millions of dollars for the right to duplicate me. That's probably a good thing, though, because I'm not so sure the world is ready for carbon copies of me wandering around.

Short of DNA splicing, Microsoft Office gives users the ability to perform multiple tasks at once, essentially allowing them to work simultaneously on different projects at the same time.

This is done by changing the views within a Microsoft Office document.

Under the view ribbon, multiple options can be found that essentially let a user be in two or more places at once.

There is the split screen tool, which permits users to see different parts of the same document. You can be working on one page while viewing another at the same time.

The split screen works well for Microsoft Word; but not so much for MS Excel, the spreadsheet of which gets divided into quadrants when the split screen function is used. This can be confusing for the user.

Split screen also doesn't allow the user to view two spreadsheets within the same workbook at the same time, either.

I suggest utilizing the side-by-side, new window and arrange all functions instead.

The side-by-side tool gives users the ability to view two different documents at once, arranged vertically side-by-side one another.

Opening a new window creates a second instance of the same document; not to be confused with creating a copy, because any edits or changes you make in one instance shows up in the additional instances that are opened.

The new window function simply lets the user see and work in different parts of the same document simultaneously. Users can then arrange their view of these instances using the arrange all function. Window views can be set up vertically or horizontally, depending on user preference.

The arrange all tool also gives users the ability to view different documents on the screen simultaneously and arrange their views according to individual preferences.

I advise deactivating synchronous scrolling, which is usually activated automatically when clicking on the view side-by-side function. Synchronous scrolling means that, as you scroll down the pane of one window, you will simultaneously scroll down the second one, too.

To me, this defeats the purpose of being able to work in two places at the same time, because the different windows are acting as one.

But, as I've said before, to each their own. Microsoft Office provides a seemingly endless tool box of options, many of which can be customized for each user.

Unlike clones, no two individuals or their preferences are exactly alike.

Microsoft gives us the feeling of being in two places at the same time, without actually having to splice our DNA. And that's a very good thing.

A 36 year-old Anadarko, Oklahoma, woman was arrested early Friday morning at 1:15 a.m. in the 3200 block of Market Street on two counts of misdemeanor battery and one count of felony interfering with witness reporting a crime, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy reported.

Ashley Marie Passi was taken into custody after Sheriff's deputies were called to a business on report of a verbally aggressive female subject.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officers made contact with two female subjects, including Passi, both of whom were upset with store employees who they said had asked them to leave the premises because of their race, the arrest report said.

Passi continued to yell at store employees who were standing at the entrance to the business while the deputies were interviewing her and the other female subject.

Passi yelled, "I don't give a f---" during the interview and insisted store employees were in the wrong. She also put her arms in front of her multiple times, stating "Just arrest me, because you're going to do so anyway."

Store employees were also interviewed, reporting that one of the female subjects was having a verbal argument with a male inside the store. Staff approached them and instructed them to leave, because they were causing a scene, the report said.

The male left the store, but the female remained, yelling about her freedom of speech. She eventually walked out of the store after staff warned her that authorities would be called if she did not leave, the report said.

The female yelled about white people to other customers as she walked out into the parking lot toward her vehicle.

Staff called Carson City Dispatch at that point, the report said.

As staff members waited at the store entrance, Passi got out of the vehicle and approached the store employees, yelling at them and eventually hitting one female employee in the jaw, knocking the cell phone out of her hand as she was calling dispatch back.

Passi then approached a male employee, who was also trying to call dispatch from his cell phone, and slapped him on his cheeks and nose using both of her hands. His phone was also knocked out of his hands.

She then walked back to the vehicle in the parking lot, where law enforcement had subsequently made contact with both female subjects.

The employees signed citizen arrest forms to press charges against Passi, who was then detained in handcuffs and taken into custody by Sheriff's deputies.

Security footage at the store showed Passi hitting both employees and knocking cell phones out of their hands, preventing them from completing their 9-1-1 calls to dispatch.

Passi was transported to the Carson City Jail for booking. Bail: $5,000.

In other arrests:

— A 30 year-old transient man was arrested Friday morning at 6:08 a.m. in the area of U.S. Highway 50 East and Flint Drive on multiple felony offenses, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy said, including commercial and vehicle burglary, possession of stolen credit cards and destruction of property valued at more than $5,000.

According to the arrest report, Jacobe Aaron Kenneston was taken into custody after a Sheriff's deputy responded to a burglary call at a business in East Carson City.

The reporting party (RP) reported to Carson City Dispatch that when he arrived at work early Friday morning, he noticed lights on inside the business. Upon entering the premises, the RP also noted that office doors, cabinets and desk drawers were left open, and it appeared that they had been gone through by someone.

The RP further stated that he heard yelling coming from the inside the business, the arrest report said, and the suspect was observed leaving out of a kitchen door, yelling and waving his arms. The suspect then followed the RP outside of the building.

When asked what he was doing there, the suspect did not respond and began walking westbound on U.S. Highway 50 East, the report said.

As a Sheriff's deputy approached the area, the suspect was observed walking westbound along the highway continuing to wave his arms in the air. The deputy stopped and made contact with the suspect, who was identified as Kenneston.

The RP was then asked to respond to the deputy's location, where Kenneston was positively identified by the witness.

Kenneston was then detained in handcuffs, and a subsequent search of Kenneston's person recovered two credit cards with another person's name on them as well as several debit gift cards, the report said.

Kenneston was transported to the Carson City Jail, where he then agreed to speak with law enforcement.

Kenneston admitted to being inside the fence of the property, but was unable to describe how he got inside. He also stated he was not inside any building, but then admitted to being inside of a shop.

Kenneston was booked on multiple felony charges. Bail: $20,000.

— A 24 year-old Reno man was arrested Friday night at 7:26 p.m. in the area of North Roop and East Long streets on a pair of felony bench warrants, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy reported, as well as misdemeanor obstructing and drug paraphernalia possession offenses.

Erik Torres Mendoza was taken into custody after Sheriff's deputies responded to a call about an intoxicated subject.

The RP told Carson City Dispatch that a male subject, a former client, had come to the location and told her he was a wanted person, the arrest report said. He also left a knife in the bathroom.

Upon arrival, law enforcement observed the male subject behind some trees. He identified himself verbally to officers and asked, "What's going on?"

As Mendoza looked at the Sheriff's deputies, though, he then started to run. Officers yelled for him to stop, but he ran between a thrift store and some apartment buildings in the area, causing deputies to lose sight of him, the report said.

Deputies then ran in another direction to try and cut off the suspect. Mendoza then appeared in front of one deputy, who drew his weapon and gave commands to stop, put his hands up and get on the ground, the report said.

Mendoza initially complied, but then got up. He was commanded again to get on the ground. Mendoza kept his hands in the air, but did not comply.

At that point, a second deputy arrived and drew his taser. Mendoza finally complied with commands to get on the ground, the report said.

He was detained in handcuffs and searched. During the suspect search, deputies recovered two glass pipes wrapped in paper recognized as methamphetamine pipes.

The suspect talked to law enforcement after being transported to the Carson City Jail. His identity was run through a records check, which confirmed an outstanding arrest warrant issued out of Placer County, CA, as well as an active priority 5 warrant from the Nevada Parole and Probation Division.

Mendoza was booked into the Carson City Jail with a no bail hold from Nevada Parole and Probation.

— A 31 year-old Reno man was arrested Friday evening at 6:10 p.m. in the 2600 block of U.S. Highway 50 East on felony drug possession with intent to sell, as well as misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy reported.

Alando Scott Adams was taken into custody after a traffic stop in which Sheriff's deputies observed a gray BMW fail to come to a stop at a posted stop sign intersection.

Upon making the stop, a Sheriff's deputy observed the silhouettes of the driver, front passenger and a rear passenger moving and looking around inside of the vehicle, the arrest report said.

Contact was made with the driver, identified as Adams, who was instructed to roll down his dark-tinted windows. Two 14 year-old minor were observed and identified as the passengers, the report said.

Adams was observed to have a wad of cash in different currency denominations in his lap. He said the cash was going to be used for purchasing gas for the vehicle.

Adams was asked to exit the vehicle for further questioning. He gave law enforcement consent to search and remove contents from a pocket, which contained another wad of cash, the report said.

A lunch box was observed inside of the vehicle, and when deputies asked Adams what was inside of it, he stated, "lunch."

Consent was given to search the lunch box, but as Adams was giving it to law enforcement, he removed a sunglasses case before dropping it. He was told to stop before he could reach down to pick it up, the report said.

When asked what was inside of the case, Adams said it was marijuana. Two small plastic bags of marijuana were recovered. Deputies explained that marijuana was legal in Nevada.

Consent was given to search the front of the vehicle, but Adams refused to let deputies search the locked glove box.

Adams said he was using the second wad of cash to pay his rent, but after reporting what his rent was, the amount of cash in the wad was not enough to cover the rent.

Deputies advised Adams that they would proceed with requesting a search warrant to search the glove box if he did not give consent, the report said.

Adams then said the glove box contained marijuana, but deputies asked why he didn't admit to that before after they explained marijuana was legal to possess in Nevada.

In total, seven bags of marijuana were recovered from the vehicle. Based on those findings, along with Adams' odd behavior statements and the different wads of cash found, the suspect was detained in handcuffs and taken into custody for marijuana possession with intent to sell, the report said.

The juvenile male passengers were observed to have white and green-colored residue on their tongues, consistent with marijuana use, resulting in the additional charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The juveniles were released to parents. Adams was transported and booked into the Carson City Jail. Bail: $5,000.

Carson City weather: Temps near 100 or more this week, haze from fires

The summer heat will settle into the Carson City region this week, with daytime temperatures in the upper 90s to 100 or higher Monday through Wednesday in the capital city and Carson Valley and 100-plus in Dayton and Virginia City, according to the National Weather Service.

A Heat Advisory is in effect Tuesday through Thursday for the Carson City region. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are also a possibility this week. The haze seen around western Nevada is from the Ferguson Fire burning near Yosemite National Park.

With the threat of afternoon thunderstorms looming for western and northern Nevada, conditions become drier Monday and Tuesday behind the wave with isolated chances of a thunderstorm for southern Lyon and Mineral counties in Nevada and Mono County in California.

Meanwhile, temperatures will rise well above seasonal averages with Tuesday being the hottest day. Extra caution is advised to sensitive populations and those expecting to be outdoors for extended periods of time as high temperatures top 100 degrees for most western Nevada valleys, 105-plus in the Basin and Range, and around 90 degrees for Sierra valleys.

The weather service advises to have plenty of water on hand and know the signs of heat related illness.

As for the extended forecast, the upper ridge will still be centered over the Great Basin Wednesday before the core shifts east toward the four corners and southern Rockies by next weekend. Very hot temperatures will transition to increasing monsoon moisture as it does.

For Wednesday, it will continue to be very hot with temperatures around 105 degrees in the hottest valleys and generally over 100 degrees for valleys below 5,000 feet. Even Sierra Valleys will be pushing 90 degrees. Given that there will be 2-3 days of hot daytimes along with warm overnights in the lower elevations, confidence is increasing that headlines for heat will be necessary, especially across the Basin and Range.

Temperatures will begin to moderate Thursday and Friday as monsoon moisture pushes north, although temperatures are still going to be pushing close to 100 degrees for western Nevada valleys.
