Event Date:
June 9, 2018 - 10:00am

CARSON CITY — If you’ve always wanted to have your photo taken with a giant doll, set aside some time this Saturday. The Nevada State Museum and the Carson Doll Club are teaming up with exhibits and hands-on activities for all ages in celebration of World Doll Day. That includes an area where you can have your photo taken with a giant doll.

“Family Fun Saturday: World Doll Day,” is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St. Doors open at 8:30 a.m.

Hands-on activities take place in the museum’s auditorium and includes the making of clothespin and paper dolls. Visitors can also visit the museum’s doll exhibit, which features a wide variety of dolls from many different eras, in the “Nevada: A People and PlaceThrough Time gallery” located on the second floor of the museum.

The Carson Doll Club will have a display of dolls in the Dema Guinn Concourse from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Access to the concourse is free. Those wishing to participate in the activities inside the museum are required to pay regular admission fees.)

This is a community event and all are welcome. An area will be available to take your picture with the dolls. For information call BJ at 775-434-7024 or Karin at 775-720-0284.

The Doll Club festivities include giveaways, information about the history of dolls and mementos given away to all interested attendees.

World Doll Day was established on June 14, 1986 to celebrate not only dolls, but caring, nurturing love and the people offering it, in general. This day is symbolized by Boots Tyner’s logo depicting a child holding a bisque doll, as a symbol of the significance of dolls in early childhood for both girls and boys.

Carson Doll Club is more than 20 years old and comprised of members who have collectible dolls and an interest in keeping doll collecting alive. The club encourages children to collect dolls and learn about doll history.

Admission is $8 for adults; free for museum members and children 17 and younger.

Wells Fargo to close Stewart Street branch in downtown Carson City

Wells Fargo Bank has announced it will be closing its Capitol Center branch, located at 211 North Stewart Street in downtown Carson City, on Sept. 12.

"We'll be consolidating the Capitol Center branch on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at 12 Noon," said Wells Fargo spokesman Tony Timmons. "Until then, customers can use this branch and bank with us as they always have."

He said the Wells Fargo Bank branches at 1550 East William Street (corner of North Saliman Road) and 2424 South Carson Street (corner of Rhodes Street) will continue doing business with customers in Carson City.

Timmons said a decline in customer traffic at the Capitol Center branch led to the company's decision to consolidate its services and distribute them to the remaining two branches in East and South Carson City, respectively.

Reasons for the decreased foot traffic aren't always clear, he said, so Wells Fargo undertakes careful assessments to determine branch strength.

"This is not an easy decision or one that we take lightly," he said. "We continually evaluate our branch network, and make adjustments based on customer use, market factors, economic trends and competitor actions."

That process, he said, is what leads the company to make decisions on expansions and consolidations.

One reason for foot traffic decline may be that an increasing number of bank customers are utilizing online banking services, Timmons said.

"While branches continue to be important in serving our customers’ needs, we’re finding that customers are often using our wide range of digital capabilities for many of their banking needs," he said. "As a result, more transactions are happening outside the branch."

NDOW: Juniors hunters have a good chance in second draw

$

Junior hunters who were either unsuccessful in the recent big game draw or missed the deadline to submit an application, have a second chance at a deer tag with the big game second draw application period opening Friday, June 8.

This year there are hundreds of remaining junior deer tags split between seven different hunt units, including 45 tags in hunt unit 032, eight tags in hunt unit 035, 116 tags in hunt unit group 101-109, 33 tags in hunt unit group 141-145, 19 tags in hunt unit group 151-156, 25 tags in hunt unit group 171-173 and five tags in hunt unit group 251-254.

The areas with remaining tags are hunt areas with higher quotas and lower demand due to their distance from population centers. Extremely high demand for tags in areas with lower tag quotas and higher populations like areas around Carson City and Reno resulted in unsuccessful junior tag applicants. Remember, youth are not guaranteed tags, and can increase their odds of drawing by putting down all five available choices, especially if they choose an area further from a large population center with a larger deer herd.

Junior hunters can take advantage of this second shot at a tag by applying for the big game second draw on ndowlicensing.com between June 8 and June 25. Eligible hunters must be 12 years old prior to the opening day of each hunt applied for and will not attain their 18th birthday until after the last day of the last season applied for. A person may only apply for a junior hunt in 5 different years.

During the stop the deputy observed a prescription bottle wedged between the driver seat and center console. The bottle contained orange and blue pills with the name of the prescription crossed out with black marker.

The deputy asked the driver what the pills were and the man said he didn’t know. The man apologized and said a friend must have left the bottle in the vehicle. The man did not appear to be under the influence of any drugs or alcohol, according to the arrest report. Bail: $2,572.

In other arrests:

— A 20-year-old transient was booked into jail Thursday, 1:45 p.m. for two misdemeanor contempt of court warrants issued June 16, 2017 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $2,000.

— A 50-year-old Carson City woman was booked into jail Thursday, 8 p.m. for a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant issued Feb. 1, 2017 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $3,000.

— A 33-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday, 7:34 p.m. for a misdemeanor failure to appear warrant issued July 11, 2017 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $331.

All information for the crime log (unless otherwise noted) comes from the arrest reports supplied by the Carson City Sheriff's Office, and is considered by law to be public information. All subjects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The policy of Carson Now is to name anyone who is arrested for a felony offense.

Ken Moen takes over as Carson City airport manager, open house planned

Event Date:
June 23, 2018 - 8:00am

After a career in air traffic control while also owning a publishing company, Ken Moen — who worked for the Reno Tahoe Airport Authority — is now managing the Carson City Airport.

“I think all my experience has put me in a position to do this job,” he said. “Owning a business, I had to learn payroll and production. I know the aviation side, and working for the RTAA taught me the how the board functions.”
His experience will be necessary as he’s had to hit the runway at full speed.

Just a couple of months into the job, he’s already planning the annual Airport Open House and Fly In on June 23.
“The real thrust of this open house is building community relationships,” Moen said. “The airport is not something everyone in the community utilizes or is aware of.”

The open house will feature aviation and aerospace exhibits.

Historical military aircraft, including Cactus Air Force Wings and Wheel, will be on display.

There will also be interactive aviation displays as well as aircraft and vehicle rides.

“We want to introduce aviation to the area’s youth and get them excited about the industry,” he said. “Our pilot base is aging. The future owners of these hangars may not even be pilots yet.”

Moen moved to Sparks as a senior in high school in 1976. Two weeks after graduating from Reed High School, he joined the U.S. Army and trained as an air traffic controller.

He started working for the Federal Aviation Administration in Reno in 1982. He worked for three years in Denver before moving back to Reno and becoming a training quality assurance staff member.

He ran a publishing business on the side from 1991-2009, producing the Wolf Pack Edge and Northern Nevada Business Weekly.

As the manager of the Carson City Airport, he said, his main focus will be on safety and security, then the day-to-day operations and business development.

“We have some vacant land we can develop both on the airside and landside of the airport,” Moen said. “We’re looking at nonaeronautical business like manufacturing, retail, restaurants or other compatible uses for our property on East College Parkway.”

He’s also looking to encourage more corporate aeronautical business activities as opposed to more private aviation activities. Presently, the majority of aviation operations are mostly recreational and training flights, or even emergency aeromedical transportation flights .

NDOT to begin resurface of Alternate U.S. 395 through Pleasant Valley beginning Monday

CARSON CITY — Drivers will see single lane closures and minor travel delays on Alternate, Old U.S. 395 in Pleasant Valley as part of a Nevada Department of Transportation project to resurface the highway.

Beginning June 11, single lane closures will take place 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays as crews resurface Alternate U.S. 395 in Pleasant Valley between the I-580/U.S. 395A junction north of Bowers Mansion and the Mt. Rose Highway intersection. Access to side roads and driveways will be maintained during construction. Bicyclists and motorcyclists should use caution through the work zone.

Resurfacing in Pleasant Valley is projected to end in early July, when crews will then begin work on Alternate U.S. 395 through Washoe Valley.

The work is part of a road improvement project which began in mid May. Since the project began, crews have graded for roadway widening at Washoe Hill and made guardrail and barrier improvements. More than 16 miles of Alternate U.S. 395 will be resurfaced between Mt. Rose Highway and the Washoe County/Carson City line.

Known as a double chip seal, two layers of new asphalt and roadway gravel will be placed on the road and sealed with a top layer of oil. Segments of additional roadside fencing and sixteen cattleguards will be installed in certain areas of Pleasant Valley to reduce vehicle-wild horse collisions and enhance highway safety.

Some narrower areas of paved roadway shoulder will also be widened to provide extra travel room for bicyclists.

The just over $3 million in roadway improvement by contractor Intermountain Slurry Seal will provide a smoother drive for the approximately 2,400 motorists who travel the road daily. The road work is anticipated to complete in late summer. The interim road surface improvements will help preserve the roadway until it is fully excavated and repaved as needed in future years.

State highway information is available at nevadadot.com or by calling (775) 888-7000.

The Western Nevada FC Coyotes will attempt to look past a very trying week as they get set to take on the East Bay Tecos Fire Saturday.

Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Golden Eagle Sports Complex in Sparks. This match is a quarterfinal match in the Wild West Conference Cup.

Just as the club was getting past the burglary from last Saturday, they were dealt another blow when head coach and general manager Ian Hill was dismissed from the team. Hill was removed from his position by a unanimous vote of the players.

Joe Lillie, who had been the assistant coach, has been named the interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

“The owners have made their decision,” Lillie said. “I’m fully focused on our season targets.

“I have a very talented group of players and I’m confident we will get the job done,” Lillie continued. “Our morale is still high and the players are still really positive of finishing strong.”

The last time these two clubs met was back on April 29 when the Coyotes won 10-0.

Also this week, the Coyotes were once again honored by being ranked as the number one team in the United Premier Soccer League for the sixth week in a row.

Carson City has a car show and Brewfest hitting the downtown corridor, and to the south, Minden and Gardnerville are having their party of the year: Carson Valley Days. It’s World Doll Day at the Nevada State Museum with special displays, activities, and a special performance by the local Young Chautauquans. Test your endurance mettle with the Genoa Peaks Mad-athon that has over 6000’ of climbing over the course of a 24 mile race: not going to lie, you won’t find me at this one. Class of 2018 turns tassels, graduates from Carson High School

Carson High School graduated about 465 seniors Saturday at its Carson City football stadium.

Under sunny skies and windy conditions with C-Hill serving as a backdrop, members of the CHS Class of 2018 in words and on their mortarboards, praised their parents, families and teachers for believing in them.

Senior class valedictorians made mention of challenges faced by students and staff at Carson High School this year, in particular losses felt by the school and community.

Timothy Jones, a fellow 2018 Carson High student, died Nov. 26, 2017 following a Nov. 9 vehicle accident that injured several students.

Jones thrived as both a student and an athlete, participating in Little League and joining the Carson High Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity baseball teams. He was also a CHS honor student.

Carson High also lost long-time teacher and coach Shane Quilling on Feb. 24, 2018 at the age of 53.

Saturday's message to the graduates, though, was one of perseverance, pursuing dreams, and achieving goals.

Graduates are slated to celebrate their high school achievement later Saturday at the 2018 CHS Safe Grad night, held overnight and followed by a next day trip to Great America.

Sunday morning at 5 a.m., graduates will board buses to head to Great America, most of them probably sleeping all the way there.

A tradition in Carson City for 29 years, Safe Grad provides CHS seniors a safe, fun, and sober celebration on graduation night and throughout the following day.

The CHS Safe Grad Committee, Carson City Sheriff’s Office, Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, and local businesses and residents help sponsor the event.

Below is an unofficial CHS graduate list, which is not complete, and is likely missing names. This list was provided to Carson Now. If there is a name to add, or a name misspelled, let us know and we will fix it right away.

Send your additions and corrections to editor@carsonnow.org. You can also click through the photos where you will find the official 2018 CHS graduation program given out Saturday. On this program is the list of all the graduates per Carson High School administrators.
