Naughty, but hilarious comedy skits and music from vaudeville and burlesque will be presented in "A Handful Of Nickels " at 7pm on Friday, June 21 and 2pm and 7pm on Saturday, June 22 at historic Piper’s Opera House in Virginia City.
The show features musician/actor Larry Elliott, who has appeared on 'Days of Our Lives’ and in the Oscar nominated movie "The Cooler" with William H. Macy. Multi-talented Larry plays guitar, piano, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and harmonica, but not all at the same time!
Comedy team Jeanette Knight and Michael Seneca, named Showtime TV's funniest duo in 1984, now reside in Southern California, but have a show business history in both Northern and Southern Nevada.
Much of the comedy in “Nickels” is drawn from Jeanette’s experiences working as a Las Vegas showgirl and dancer. Her last gig in that capacity was at the Las Vegas Hilton in the world renowned “Bal du Moulin Rouge.” Prior to that, she toured the country under Harold Minsky’s supervision, with the last of the true burlesque comics as part of “Minsky’s Follies.”
Recently, she was recognized as outstanding professional lead actress in a musical by the Desert Theatre League for her portrayal of Louise in the cult musical, “Always, Patsy Cline.”
Michael Seneca has a long list of credits beginning with the famous comedy-improv group Second City in Chicago. While residing in Northern Nevada he worked on films with David Mamet, Joe Mantegna and Don Ameche.
Both Jeanette and Michael appeared in “Bonanza: The Next Generation,” alongside the descendants of the original principal actors, Gillian Greene, and Michael Landon, Jr., while filming near Reno. Michael and Jeanette have performed nationwide in many venues, including the Tony-award winning Victory Gardens Theatre in Chicago.
In “A Handful of Nickels,” these three show biz veterans pay tribute to such greats as Jimmy Durante, George M. Cohan, George Burns and Gracie Allen, as well as some lesser-known baggy pants comics and composers with vaudeville and burlesque routines. The show is sure to be a foot-stomping, hand-clapping, hilarious romp through the silliness that was classic vaudeville and American burlesque.
Piper’s Opera House is located on the corner of B and Union Streets in Virginia City.
