On Sunday, June 2, 350 people will provide services rather than going to service

Introducing Grace Works, or as others have called it “The Church has left the Building!” This is a Sunday when area churches show God’s love through providing services, rather than going to services. It is an event that has been going on in several other communities across the US, involving thousands of people on a given Sunday. The First Presbyterian Church started it here in Carson City two years ago; last year Ministerios Una Puerta Al Camino ( The Church of the Door to the Way) joined them. Over 150 people participated. This year the First United Methodist Church and the Fountainhead Four Square Church, along with Carson City Tiger Shark Swim Club will be joining the effort, raising the number of participants to well over 350. Rather than spending the morning in church, they will be spending the day in places throughout the community, spreading God’s love through actions rather than words.

On Sunday, June 2, volunteers will be found at over 15 project sites planting gardens, painting facilities, cleaning up parks, fixing party backdrops, demolishing and rebuilding playgrounds, cleaning up greenhouses, sorting layettes, and packaging food for disaster relief. They will be at places like the Senior Center, Children’s Museum, Small Blessings Preschool, Food for Thought, FISH, Do Drop In, The Greenhouse Project, Fremont School, Community Pregnancy Center, Linear Park and Governors’ Fields. There will also be teams going out to individual homes to help with home repairs and yard work that the homeowner is unable to do on their own. Praise bands will go to assisted living centers around town to bring worship services to those who cannot get out.

“We hope this is just the beginning of a larger effort where we can have all the churches in the area coming together to help our community and pass along some of God’s blessings which we have already received,” commented Rob Scanland, Grace Works Steering Committee Chair. To learn more about Grace Works, contact any of the four churches mentioned above.
