While most of the Memorial Day weekend will be dry and warm, there is an increasing chance for showers and high elevation snow in the Sierra toward the end of the weekend, the National Weather Service in Reno reports.
A persistent area of low pressure near the Pacific Northwest will move into northern California on Memorial Day. For today and Sunday forecasters say the low will produce gusty afternoon and evening winds which may lead to unsafe boating conditions on Lake Tahoe, Pyramid, Lahontan, Topaz and Crowley.
As the low moves inland on Memorial Day, there is good confidence in showers and high elevation snow occurring in the Sierra by late in the afternoon, according to the weather service. There's a 40 percent chance of rain in Carson City on Monday.
Light snow accumulations or slushy road conditions are possible on the Sierra passes above 8,500 feet through Tuesday morning. This includes Tioga Pass, Sonora Pass, Monitor Pass, Ebbetts Pass and Carson Pass. Those going camping or into the back country will need to prepare for cold conditions and snow.
For Carson City, expect highs today and Sunday in the upper 60s, and on Monday, the lower 60s. Winds will be breezy at around 15 mph with gusts to 25 mph.
