Nevada’s unemployment dropped to 9.6 percent in April, falling nearly 2 percentage points over the year. Carson City's unemployment rate fell to 10.1 percent and is now the only metro area in the state to have a double digit unemployment rate, according to the state's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
Statewide, this amounts to 132,400 people out of work, dropping by 27,000 since April 2012, said the Department's Chief Economist Bill Anderson. Nevada's other metro areas also saw a decline in the number of jobless in April. Las Vegas’ unemployment rate fell to 9.6 percent and the Reno/Sparks area rate dropped to 9.7 percent. In Elko, the rate dropped to 5.6 percent.
Nevada Sen. Harry Reid issued the following statement after Nevada’s unemployment rate decreased from 9.7 to 9.6 percent in April:
“Our state’s unemployment has slowly improved but Nevadans are still struggling to find work. To maintain this progress, we must remain vigilant to protect the middle class and improve the small business community. I have worked hard to give small businesses new opportunities to expand and hire new workers but Democrats in the Senate can’t do this alone. I hope Republicans join us to find a lasting solution that eliminates waste, stabilizes the deficit, and gets Americans back to work.”
