The Assembly Ways and Means Committee met to discuss a bill that would help fund Washoe County Schools on Monday. AB46 – which has been referred as the “most important bill for Washoe school district” by Assembylman David Bobzien – would raise the sales and property tax rates in Washoe County to fund capital improvements at aging schools.

During the meeting, Pedro Martinez, Superintendent of Washoe County School District, noted that AB46 would produce $20 million a year for school construction.

When Ways and Means Chairwoman Maggie Carlton asked if there were any amendments to the bill in this morning’s meeting, the committee remained silent. As a result, the bill will proceed as first introduced, asking the Nevada Legislature to raise property taxes by 5 cents per $100 valuation and sales tax by 0.25 percent. As it’s written, the bill requires a two-thirds majority in both the Assembly and Senate to pass.
