On this week's It's Your City, Camille Jones, manager of the Carson City Greenhouse Project discusses spring and summer activities at the facility, located behind Carson High School.
Established in 2010, the Greenhouse Project is more than an acre of growing space, a 3,000-square-foot greenhouse an 70 raised beds for gardens and has the potential to grow and distribute 4,500 pounds of produce annually. The facility serve as a teaching facility for hands-on training programs that emphasize environmental stewardship, the importance of outdoor activity, civic engagement and academic achievement.
Through these programs, students cultivate and distribute vegetables for school culinary classes and local food banks and special needs students produce flower baskets for the downtown Carson City corridor.
With local food banks and low-income individuals receiving 90 percent of the production, the project aims to provide nutritious, locally grown vegetables to people in need. Those local programs to receive food from the Greenhouse include the Salvation Army, Ron Wood Family Resource Center and FISH.
Two recent Carson High School graduates are now working as Americorps interns at the Greenhouse. Currently the project is growing radish, lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes and drought-tolerant flowers.
Its biggest fundraiser is the Concert Under the Stars held annually at Cafe at Adele's in Carson City. This year's concert is July 9 and features the Little River Band as its headliner and special guests Fred Tackett and Paul Barrere of Little Feat. Go here for tickets.
