Using the model of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Preserve Nevada has released its biannual “Most Endangered Places list” with the Nevada State Prison, Governor John Jones House, Jack's Bar and the First Presbyterian Church among threatened Carson City landmarks.

In honor of Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration, the non-profit dedicated to the preservation of Nevada’s cultural, historical, and archeological heritage, has selected more than 150 locations across the state to promote. Each site was identified as a preservation success, loss, or endangered location.

After soliciting advice from individuals, organizations and agencies throughout the state, and collecting information concerning the many threatened and saved sites, the Board of Directors of Preserve Nevada picked sites deemed most deserving at the time.

The goal of the list is to bring attention to significant buildings, sites, and landscapes that face a threat. Like the national list Preserve Nevada hopes to gather support for the effort to record and preserve the history of the state.

Nevadans are proud of their heritage but many of the new residents are unaware of the richness of the State’s past and the threats historic resources face now and in the future. Preserve Nevada hopes that the “Eleven Most” list will be a way to appeal to natives and newcomers alike to rally around the history and preserve at least a piece of the past for future generations.

Successes Include:
• Buildings 100 and 200, US Bureau of Reclamation campus, Boulder City
• Morelli House, Las Vegas
• Foreman’s House at Floyd Lamb Park, Tule Springs
• Fourth Ward School, Virginia City
• Mizpah Hotel, Tonopah
Endangered Include:
• The Victory Hotel, Las Vegas
• Reno Mercantile/Masonic Lodge No. 13
• Nye County Courthouse, Tonopah

Lost Include:
• Moulin Rouge Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas
• Mapes Hotel, Reno
• Charles Clinton Stone Row House, Tonopah

Nevada’s Sesquicentennial, the 150th anniversary of Nevada’s admission to the Union, will provide opportunities for celebration and reflection as we come together statewide to commemorate our shared history and build a foundation of cultural appreciation for generations to come. Nevada’s one of a kind and diverse history will be celebrated throughout the state for an entire year in order to promote pride in the shared heritage of all Nevadans. Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration will commence on Nevada Day 2013 and conclude with an expanded Nevada Day celebration October, 2014. For more information, please visit www.nevada150.org.
