What Works: Create your happy life

Sunday at the Festival of Earthly Treasures was beneficial for both myself and the clients I had the pleasure of serving. I had the opportunity to coach on a variety of topics, from learning how to grown an existing business and bring out the best in a business team to acting with intention to get better results and identifying what creates happiness in life.

Creating happiness was a common theme throughout the day. So, I thought I would share an exercise with you today that will help you smile more, frown less, and attract more happiness into your life.

I call this nifty tool my “happy pie.” It’s easy to create. Just get a sheet of paper and a pen (or pencil if you like to erase).

Step One: Draw a circle. This circle represents your happy place. It’s the spot within you which, when filled, brings you joy in life and gives you those energetic “wow” moments you crave.

Step Two: Write down the following categories. 1) Romantic Relationship, 2) Personal Relationships (Friends, etc.), 3) Family Relationships, 4)Business/Career Fulfillment, 5) Personal Interests/Activities

Step Three: Fill in your pie. Think about what is currently bringing you happiness. Keeping in mind these five categories need to add up to 100% in your “happy pie,” assign a percentage to each category and draw (or color) that percentage into your pie. Yes, there are other things that can make you happy. However, this exercise is intended to focus on the key areas where happiness breakdown can occur.

Step Four: Review your pie. Create two columns – The first is “why this makes me happy.” Here, you will state why you derive happiness from this category. The second is “why this isn’t making me happy.” This will show you where this area is lacking.

Step Five: Take a close look. What is currently making you happy? What is bringing you down? What can you shift and change? Where could you seek help? If you see issues within your family, would communication or counseling help? If you see business issues, how can you address those?

Everyone’s happy pie is different. What’s in yours? What brings you joy and gives you “wow” moments in your life? Have you identified anything, while doing your “happy pie” that gave you a moment of clarity? The floor is yours, Carson City.
