Building on the Carson City library’s month-long focus on engineering, on May 14 at 6:30 p.m. Library Director Sena Loyd will facilitate a panel discussion among five local professional engineers, four women and a gentleman about the ways females of all ages can succeed and advance in the field of engineering and be recognized for life-changing contributions as engineers and leaders.

The talk will be hosted from the Carson City Library’s business branch, the Business Resource Innovation Center (the BRIC) located at 108 E. Proctor St.

Panelists include representatives from both the public and private sector and include: Dorothy Tiimian-Palmer, P.E. President and Chief Operating Officer of Vidler Water Company; Logan Palmer water resources EIT from Reno-based Stantec and Megan Suter water resources EIT from Minden-based R.O. Anderson Engineering. Public sector professionals include Maria Maness, P.E., the ADA Coordinator for the Nevada Department of Transportation and Xuan Wang, PhD, P.E. the Transportation Modeling Program Manager for the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County.

“I’ve just returned from Africa where I met with local doctors and other engineering professionals to discuss ways to develop a clean drinking water supply. The timing of our local library’s focus on how engineers make a world of difference couldn’t be better. I’m pleased to share highlights of my professional journey with the audience,” said Palmer.

Focus on engineering has been sparked from a traveling exhibit supported by the National Science Foundation, titled Discover Tech: Engineers Make a World of Difference. This new traveling exhibition for libraries introduces the role engineers play in our lives.

The primary message of the exhibition is that engineers are real people who, through a creative and collaborative design process, arrive at practical solutions to help solve society’s problems in the U.S. and throughout the world. Hands-on and multimedia components allow visitors to interact with exhibit content in a dynamic way, encouraging new perspectives on engineers and engineering.

Discover Tech, scheduled to visit nine public libraries throughout the U.S., is a part of the STAR Library Education Network (STAR_Net). This national program is led by the Space Science Institute’s National Center for Interactive Learning (http://www.nc4il.org). Exhibit partners include the Lunar and Planetary Institute, the National Girls Collaborative Project, and the American Library Association.

The exhibit will remain on view in the library through May 24 during regular library hours. The full slate of events is online at www.discovertechcarson.com
