Western Nevada College Wildcats Softball plays host to the Coyotes of the College of Southern Nevada this weekend for the final series of the 2014 season. Games began Friday afternoon at Edmonds Sports Complex. Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
WNC fell 5-15, despite a fifth inning rally in the first game, and dropped the second game, 5-14.
In game one, CSN struck early, putting up one run in the first inning. The Wildcats answered back with lively bats of their own. Madi Gonzalez led off by reaching on an error, Katelyn Bomar singled and a single by Jenny Rechel scored Gonzalez to knot the score at 1-1.
In the second inning, CSN showed no mercy. Former WNC catcher Sydney Darby singled and her teammate Sarina Creswell homered. The Coyotes scored three more runs before WNC could retire the side. CSN padded their lead to 9-1 in the third and tallied six more in the fourth making the score 15-1.
The Wildcats managed a late game rally in the bottom of the fifth. Lindsay Ashbaugh led off with a double. Meghan Hospodka reached on an error, and Mackenzie Hospokda singled to score Ashbaugh. Gonzalez singled, scoring Meghan Hospodka, Bomar’s at bat took out Gonzalez on a double play, and Katilyn Covione knocked a homerun that scored Mackenzie Hospodka. The rally wasn’t enough, WNC fell 5-15 in five innings. Pitcher Carlee Beck took the loss.
In the second game. The Wildcats held off CSN in the first, and jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the inning. Gonzalez led off with a walk, Covione singled and Rechel doubled to score the runners. Septon singled, scoring Rechel, and Ashbaugh doubled to score Septon. CSN answered with three runs in the second, bringing the score to 4-3 in favor of WNC.
The Wildcats added one run in the second. Gonzalez walked and scored on a single by Covione. Bomar also singled, but was left stranded. 5-3, WNC. CSN answered with one of their own in the top of the third. 5-4 WNC.
CSN put the pressure on with a two run homer and two additional runs in the fourth and a three run homer in the fifth to take the lead, 11-5. Carlee Beck came in to pitch for Ashbaugh in an effort to stop the Coyotes, but allowed CSN to bring in a three run homer and broaden their lead, 14-5.
WNC was unable to recover. Final score after five innings was 14-5, CSN. Ashbaugh took the loss for WNC.
