There is a new Fitness 1440 center at the north end of Carson City in the old K-Mart shopping center. What made me notice this was that I heard that artist Coeleen Lundy had painted a mural in the children’s area of the fitness center.

I love seeing art being spread throughout our city, but what is especially novel about this particular work is that it was done in barter, a word we are all hearing and seeing more and more. Barter: To trade goods and services for, well, goods and services, no CASH need.

I like it, use it and see many of our businesses using this age old practice of procurement as well.

Check out these sites like www.tradeaway.com or www.barterplanet.com. It is a fast growing ancient practice with modern day methods to help assist us in bartering our good and services and not just on a local basis. It is international. Very cool.

Now about that new mural, Lundy is new to Carson City and works as an in home health care giver. She has lived here for a little more than a year.

“I love our capital city and all it has to offer. We have the arts, entertainment, WNC College, great restaurants, a fun downtown and friendly people. It is all here in one beautiful city,” she said.

As an artist for 25 years, Lundy has sold and traded her art for about 15 years. She works with all forms of paint and considers herself a mixed media artist. This last year she enjoyed taking several classes at WNC to perfect her skills.

The mural in the Children’s area is painted with acrylic paints, depicting a floral scene with butterflies and honey bees.

“I traded artwork for a full fitness membership because I love this fitness center and have gained such respect for its co-owner Richard Pearson, one of the nicest people you will ever meet," she said.

Richard Pearson, co-owner of Fitness 1440 said “the mural has been well received and enjoyed so much, we love it!”

Lundy smiled a big smile when she said that they are going to have her do more murals in the future for the Fitness 1440 center.

I asked her if she was going to barter for her work? She said “That is what’s great about trade, seeing if you have something that each other wants and can use or benefit from.

"They have lots for me to benefit from here, classes, fitness and nutrition products and services. They receive beautiful art for all to enjoy. It is a Win-Win.”
