A meaningful community partnership unanimously adopted last fall between Carson City Supervisors, the Carson City School District, and Carson City Library Trustees empowered the Carson City Library to be an essential community resource providing reliable Internet connections as well as state of the art computers.

This act ignited the Carson City Library as an available and valuable resource for the students to access tools when needed: during school hours, after-school hours, and weekends; in addition to being the gateway to essential online resources.

This partnership is preparing Carson High students for a future in a digital age-while learning history in a meaningful way- and transforming learning opportunities.

This collaboration has provided an environment that has individualized student learning and enhanced students’ college and career readiness. The skills they are learning will last a lifetime.

Professional educators and historians have already judged the students’ efforts as successes on a local level. National History Day is a highly regarded academic program for high school students. Students choose historical topics related to a theme and conduct extensive primary and secondary research through libraries, archives, museums, oral history interviews and historic sites.

After analyzing and interpreting their sources and drawing conclusions about their topics’ significance in history, students present their work in original papers, websites, exhibits, performances and documentaries. The program advances from a local competition to regional and culminates in the Kenneth E. Behring National Contest in June.

This is the second year that Fagundes’ class has competed in National History Day and four students made nationals last year. Fagundes says while the state will pay the student’s entry fees, they will begin fundraising immediately to cover the rest of their travel expenses.

Your Knowledge and Discovery Place, the Carson City Library is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The library is located at the corner of Roop and Washington Streets.
