Violinist Andrew Sords Performs Sunday in Carson City Symphony's 'Sagebrush Celebration'

The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, continues its thirtieth season on Sunday, April 27, 2014, 4 p.m., with a concert, "Sagebrush Celebration," at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William Street in Carson City. Featured guest soloist is violinist Andrew Sords in his third appearance with the Symphony, playing Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto.

This concert is an official Nevada 150 Event. The Symphony will premiere "Sagebrush Celebration," a commissioned work commemorating Carson City Symphony's 30th season and Nevada's 150th anniversary, by Cambridge, Mass., composer Carson Cooman. Also on the program are Bizet's "L'Arlésienne Suite No. 2," and Bugli's "Ruby Mountain Reflections," written for and performed by the Ruby Mountain Symphony in Elko,in 2012.

Tickets cost $15 general admission; $12 for seniors, students, and Symphony Association members; and free for youth age 16 and under. Tickets are on sale at Play Your Own Music in the Carson Mall, online at CCSymphony.com, or at the door.

The concert includes pre-show entertainment by Acoustic Solution - a multi-instrument eclectic folk duo, John and Wendy Andrews - in the lobby beginning at 3:00 p.m.

The audience is also invited to a free concert preview in the Sierra Room at 3:15 p.m. and a dinner reception after the concert. The preview, hosted by Conductor David Bugli, will include discussions with composer Carson Cooman and soloist Andrew Sords about the concert and music. The post-concert reception is at Garibaldi's Ristorante Italiano, 307 N. Carson Street in Carson City. For reception reservations, required in advance, call the Symphony at 775-883-4154.

Internationally known violinist Andrew Sords' performances have been described by critics globally as "utterly radiant" and "exceptionally heartfelt and soulful." He has appeared as soloist with over 100 orchestras and performed for notable recital series across four continents. In Nevada, he will visit orchestra classes in Carson City schools.

Carson Cooman is an American composer with a catalog of hundreds of works - from solo instrumental pieces to operas, and from orchestral works to hymn tunes. He currently is Composer in Residence at the Memorial Church, Harvard University. Sords and Cooman also will perform in a house recital on Friday, April 25. Carson City Symphony is a community orchestra of about 60 players who perform music from the 15th to 21st centuries. The 2013-14 concert season is supported with public funding through the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Pre-concert talks are funded in part by a grant from Nevada Humanities.
