The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a scam in which business owners have been contacted and warned their utilities would be shut off because their bill is delinquent.

According to Sgt. Pat Brooks, the scam involves a person representing themselves as someone from a utility company who calls and demands money to bring the account current. They advise the business owner that if they do not comply today the power or other utility service will be terminated.

The suspect then advises the business owner to purchase a money pak (money order that uses a pin number) and provide them with the pin number. They money is extracted from the account.

Should anyone receive a call with this or similar circumstances, they are urged to contact their utility provider from a known phone number to confirm the charges are accurate, said Brooks.

Last week the Carson City Sheriff's Office warned residents about a scam where a man claiming to be a law officer is calling and telling people they missed jury duty and they will go to jail unless they immediately pay a fine.
