Two Carson City women face gross misdemeanor charges of conspiracy to obtain money through false pretense after allegedly using a Walmart receipt exchanging it out for cash.
The women, ages 45 and 50, were arrested Saturday at 12:23 p.m. According to the arrest report, Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to the Walmart in the 3200 block of Market Street after store security had the pair detained.
Upon arrival officers spoke with the loss prevention agent who said she observed the two women walk into the store and proceed down several aisles. At one point she saw the 45-year-old woman pull a receipt out and search for specific items that matched up to specific ones on the receipt then put them into a Walmart shopping bag, the arrest report states. The security agent then observed the two women pass all pay points and into the customer service area where the 50-year-old woman returned the stolen merchandise and received cash in the sum of $45.48, the arrest report states.
The 50-year-old woman was detained and escorted to the store security office and the other woman went back into the aisles and continued to shop. After a few minutes the officer located the 45-year-old woman outside and escorted her back into the store's security office where both women were read their Miranda warning rights. Both agreed to speak, according to the arrest report.
The 45-year-old woman said she came in with an old receipt to exchange a vacuum belt which she said she brought into the store but with no other merchandise. Instead of taking it straight to the customer service desk, she went and selected a phone charger and shaving razors with the 50-year-old woman, then asked her to return the items she had taken along with the vacuum belt. The 45-year-old woman said she wrote a statement admitting the crime and said "I don't know why" referring to the intent, the arrest report states.
The officer then spoke with the 50-year-old woman who said she went into Walmart with her roommate and knew she only had a vacuum belt on her person to return. She then obtained additional items taken by the 45-year-old woman and took them to the customer service counter where she received cash. She said she was stopped and escorted to the security office.
The arresting officer asked where the old receipt came from and the 50-year-old woman said she personally purchased all the items a few days ago. The security officer pulled the transaction from the date and time provided on the old receipt and it showed a male subject purchasing the items. When the 50-year-old was confronted with her lies, she had nothing to say, the arrest report states.
Meeting all the elements of obtaining money under false pretenses, a gross misdemeanor, and misdemeanor conspiracy to obtain money, both women were arrested. Bail for each: $3,637.
