This week's It's Your City is with Jim Peckham, executive director of Friends in Service Helping, otherwise known as FISH, located in Carson City.
FISH provides food, shelter, clothing and access to healthcare with a "hand up rather than hand out" philosophy. Peckham provides an update this winter season's happenings at the thrift stores, dining rooms, and homeless shelters.
The shelters FISH operates have been full, he explained. FISH has partnered with Carson City this year to provide emergency shelter access when the region experiences severe cold weather as it did in late 2013.
There will be a celebrity waiter event at Glen Eagles on March 29. The Have a Heart banquet is a major fundraiser for FISH that generates money to keep the operation going. There's also raffle fundraiser where a $1,000 gas card donated by Dick Campagni Carson City Toyota will be drawn. Raffle tickets cost $10 and can be purchased at any of the FISH thrift stores. For information on the fundraisers or to make a donation, call 775-882-FISH (3474). You can also go to the website here.
