Substitute teachers can learn insight into providing a more successful classroom environment for their students through two hands-on classes offered this spring at Western Nevada College in Carson City.

Management Methods for Substitutes (EPD 276) helps substitute teachers develop strategies to provide an improved learning environment for not only their students but for themselves. The class meets from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8 and 15 and is taught by Dr. Michelle Rousselle.

“We will explore new teaching methods and provide a handbook with practical activities as well as ‘make and take’ activities,” she said.

Dr. Thomas Herring will collaborate to teach a second class, Science for Teachers (EPD 295), in April.

“Students from past classes have said they learned strategies that they hadn't seen before, gained confidence, and took away important knowledge about legal requirements. They also learned how to access the substitute system online, how to get called to work initially, and be called back to work,” Rousselle said.

Register for the classes at my.wnc.edu. For more information, phone 775-445-3000.
