Dr. Peter Reed, PhD, will be the featured speaker at the Carson City Chamber of Commerce Soup’s On! Luncheon on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 11:30 a.m. at Gold Dust West. Reed joined the University of Nevada Sanford Center for Aging as Director and Professor of Community Health Services in September 2013.

The Sanford Center for Aging was the brainchild of Carson City resident Jean Cameron Sanford who donated $100,000 to UNR in 1985 to study the effects of aging after caring for her mother. She envisioned “a future for older adults that offered vibrant health, cultural and social opportunities, and dignity of independence.”

The center is instrumental in shaping the future of gerontology and geriatrics in Nevada.

“Nevada’s population is rapidly aging and has known challenges in its health care and social service workforce meeting present and future demands. Given these transitions, I believe there is a demographic imperative to bridge disciplines and link institutions, service agencies and providers of all types to foster a fully-integrated and comprehensive system of supports," said Reed in a 2013 interview.

Dr. Reed most recently served as Chief Executive Officer of the Pioneer Network, an international non-profit based in Chicago. He also served as the Adjunct Associate Professor at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis, President and CEO of the Center for Health Improvement in Sacramento and the Senior Director of Programs for the Alzheimer’s National Office. He brings 20 years of experience in the field of aging and is a popular national and international speaker.

The Chamber’s Soup’s On! Luncheons are open to the public. Cost is $16 per person with advance reservation. 882-1565.
