Literacy: The Digital Kind

The @ Two Digital Learning Center, on the second-floor of the Carson City Library, has launched learning opportunities by scheduling a new-round of basic computer classes.

Located on the second floor of the library annex, above the current Youth Department, @Two has been a busy community resource for patrons over the last year. Unfortunately access to the second-floor has been unreliable thanks to an aging and highly temperamental elevator.

For the time-being a stairwell has been made available to be used by the public until the innards of the elevator are replaced and digital-learning classes can now resume.

“The more I live, the more I learn. The more I learn, the more I realize, the less I know.”-Michel Legrand

With the adoption of the 2014-2019 “Level Up: A Strategic Plan for Learning” Carson City Library continues to build upon the ideal that technology matters.

It is the community that has the advantage of stepping up to today’s advanced technology and in the words of the library’s Deputy Director Tammy Westergard, “Carson City Library is positioned to help bridge the “Digital Divide” by providing free access and training opportunities…The @Two Digital Learning Center programs can help create a pathway to help the community connect online with family and friends; understand and use Google; master basic computer skills with how-to-instruction in groups and one-on-one; protect digital information and identity; print; manage online transactions, files and personal finance; search the internet for credible information; use email; make websites and much more. Studies have shown that the effects of bridging the digital divide not only support basic digital literacy but also promote further development of skills.”

That being said, the vision for the Carson City Library…

• is an essential community resource which supports community schools, life-long learning, literacy and digital literacy,
• provides essential technology tools and training to help citizens gain and sharpen marketable skills,
• recognizes community challenges and opportunities and responds nimbly with creativity and an entrepreneurial spirit,
• is a place for everyone to access cultural and civic life,
• is customer focused,
• grows its most valuable resources: a passionate and dedicated staff
