Bring in the small dogs and secure the lawn furniture, a cold front passing through the Sierra and western Nevada on Saturday will bring strong and gusty southwest winds to the Carson City region, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Forecasters say the system will bring dangerous crosswinds along Interstates 80 and 580 as well as Highway 395 with travel likely impacted for high profile vehicles. A High Wind Warning has been issued by the weather service.

Winds will increase Saturday morning. The strongest winds will be late in the morning through early evening and then taper off at night. Areas of blowing dust with visibility reductions as well as choppy conditions on all area lakes are also likely. There is a High Wind Watch in effect Saturday morning through Saturday evening for the lee of the Sierra, including the Highway 395 corridor from Susanville south to Mammoth Lakes.

Southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 60 mph are possible in the watch area with gusts up to 110 mph along Sierra ridges. In addition to the winds, light showers are also expected with a couple inches of snow in the Sierra possibly causing travel impacts over Sierra passes.
