Wet Easter weekend possible for Carson City, snow in the Sierra

Whether you're hoping for some weekend spring ski action at Lake Tahoe or plan to stick around Carson City for the Easter holiday, you may want to bring along a warm jacket and umbrella. High elevation snow in the Sierra and rain through Western Nevada are a likelihood, the National Weather Service in Reno reports.

Low pressure in the eastern Pacific is expected to move slowly toward the California coast by the weekend. This will bring the likelihood of rain over a larger portion of western Nevada, and a mix of rain and snow in the Sierra.

Because the track of this low remains uncertain, so is the location, intensity and amount of precipitation, along with snow levels. However recent computer projections are in better agreement with the placement of the low pressure in a 100 mile vicinity along the central California coast on Sunday.

Overall there is high confidence for showers starting Saturday afternoon and evening and continuing through Easter Sunday. Slight variations in the track will impact snow levels and the amount of precipitation that occurs. Snow levels could be anywhere from 6,000 to 8,000 feet, which could impact the Sierra passes.

There is moderate confidence that Easter weekend travel may be impacted by rain, snow, or a rain/snow mix. Areas under the heaviest precipitation could receive up to 0.5 inches of rain during this storm, but location of heaviest precipitation remains uncertain.
