Snowstorm brings slick roads, wrecks, several spinouts

UPDATE: An accident was reported at 5:01 p.m. in the northbound lane of Highway 395 at Highway 50. NHP reports no serious injuries.

UPDATE: Southbound traffic at Hot Springs and Roop in Carson City is closed due to several spinouts as of 3:26 p.m. Traffic is backed up in the area, with snowplows and sanders making their way to clear the road.

An accident reported at I-580 and Eastlake is causing traffic problems extending into the Washoe Valley and old Highway 395, according to NHP. The freeway was closed briefly. Both lanes are now open as of 3:38 p.m.

UPDATE: Limited visibility and slick roads has made travel difficult in Carson City Tuesday. Emergency crews report multiple wrecks and spinouts along Carson Street.

Road crews are out sanding in areas from north to south Carson Street, Fairview, William, Roop and Stewart and Fifth streets streets while Nevada Department of Transportation crews have been out sanding the Carson City Freeway and Highway 50 East. Steady snow continued to accumulate by 1 p.m., with frigid temperatures causing slush to turn to ice along the roadways.

An accident in the 3400 block of South Carson Street involving at least three vehicles was reported at 11:30 a.m. and caused traffic to back up for several blocks. Motorists were re-routed as officers closed off the section of the road to deal with the wreck.

A single vehicle accident at Fairview and Carson Street was reported at 11:38 p.m., which also caused traffic problems as snow continues to accumulate in Carson City.

An accident reported at 12:15 p.m. on Roop Street south of Northridge was also causing traffic problems.

Carson City Fire Department was called to the first big accident late this morning described as a collision of three vehicles with airbag deployment. The Nevada Highway Patrol also responded. Injuries were said to be minor, according to first responders on the scene. The accident had traffic backed up for several blocks, according dispatchers. Carson City Sheriff's Office patrol deputies and NHP closed the road and then re-routed traffic.

City crews were called for sanding areas around Fairview and Carson Street, said to be especially slick. Several spinouts have been reported to dispatch. A minor accident was reported around noon at Lompa Lane and College Parkway. No injuries were reported but the wreck was causing traffic issues.

A winter storm warning is in effect through today. Carson City could get up to six inches of snow out of this latest storm.
