Tie down the lawn furniture, secure the small dogs and put a sweater on them while you're at it — a strong cold front will blow into the Carson City and Lake Tahoe region today with snow in the forecast by Tuesday morning.

A Wind Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for much of Northern Nevada as the front pushes through. Winds will be from the west to southwest, 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph in the western valleys and 60 mph in wind prone areas.

Blowing dust may reduce visibility on Highway 50 east of Carson City and Interstate 80 east of Fernley. Strong gusts may make travel difficult along Highways 395, 50, 95 and Interstate 80.

The front is expected to bring widespread snow down to valley floors on Tuesday morning with 1-3 inches expected for Carson City and Reno and up to 6 inches in the Sierra and Lake Tahoe Basin. Tuesday through the rest of the week temperatures will be 15-20 degrees below normal. Wednesday and Thursday day time high temperatures in western Nevada may remain below freezing with a slight warm up into the weekend.
