An 81-year-old Gardnerville man faces a murder charge after he allegedly shot and killed his caretaker with a shotgun at his Fish Springs home on Thursday.
Melvin Norlund was being held without bail and booked on a charge of murder after shooting 51-year-old Catherine Mary Costanza of Concord, Calif, said Douglas County Sheriff's Sgt. Pat Brooks.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded at 1:20 p.m. Thursday to a call of a person shot in the 1300 block of Homestead Road. Deputies arrived on scene and found Costanza dead from an apparent gunshot wound, said Brooks.
During the investigation, Norlund stated the woman was his caretaker and they were involved in an altercation in which he shot her, said Brooks.
After the shooting Norlund contacted a neighbor and asked them to call 911 to report what happened, said Brooks. The investigation is ongoing.
