A strong cold front will move through the Sierra, Carson City and western Nevada on Tuesday bringing gusty winds and much colder temperatures with it, the National Weather Service reports.
By Tuesday afternoon southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected with gusts of 50 mph possible through much of the evening and then tapering off after midnight. The winds will make for dangerous boating conditions on Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake, as well as strong crosswinds for travelers along Highway 395 and Interstate 580 through the Washoe Valley.
The strong, persistent winds could create areas of blowing dust, which will reduce visibility along Highway 95, interstate 80 east of Fernley, and Highway 50 east of Dayton. A Wind Advisory has been issued between noon and 8 p.m. Tuesday, according to the weather service.
After the cold front passes through Tuesday night, the cold core of the low pressure system will move across Nevada bringing much colder temperatures and chances for rain and snow showers. After near normal temperatures Tuesday afternoon, temperatures on Wednesday are expected to plummet, 20 to 25 degrees below normal. Highs in the 50s are expected for Western Nevada, with highs in the 40s for the Sierra.
Temperatures will be only slightly warmer on Thursday. The good news is that a high pressure system will build in the region later in the week with temperatures returning to near normal for the weekend, right on time for Street Vibrations, the Candy Dance in Genoa, the Lake Tahoe Marathon and Tough Mudder events.
