UPDATED 6:22PM: High winds blowing into Carson City knocked down trees and cut power Wednesday to several places throughout town, including Carson Middle School where a downed line started a small brush fire.
Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies responded to traffic-related problems associated with power lines at Arrowhead and Medical Parkway, Arrowhead and Emerson and the 4000 block of North Carson Street. As of 5:50 p.m. power and traffic traffic control lights were out along Carson Street between Robinson and William streets and portions of the west side. Power was restored at Medical Parkway at around 5:50 p.m.
Musser Street was ordered closed at Winters due to live downed lines. Firefighters re-routed traffic as city crews hauled tree debris when lines fell across homes and a pole snapped at Richmond and Musser streets.
A Wind Advisory is in effect through 11 p.m. tonight for the Carson City region, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Power poles were reported broken and down near the Holiday Inn Express on North Carson Street. A report came in of sparking power lines near Freemont school and Carson Middle School where a power line snapped and grass was burning. NV Energy crews respond throughout the afternoon due to the number of downed lines are live wires.
The Carson City Sheriff's Office assisted with traffic control in the areas where the poles and trees fell and away from the live wires. Meanwhile, a tree fell in the area of Arrowhead and Emerson, blocking one lane of traffic.
The city's public works and road department was activated to keep up with reports of falling trees and branches in roadways.
The highest wind gust thus far has been 49 mph recorded at 3:18 p.m., according to CarsonWeather.com.
